Driving Insurance North Carolina

We are working on AOS in North Carolina. I am trying to obtain a driver's license. One requirement is for insurance liability. In North Carolina, driving insurance providers regard foreign citizens not from Canada and Puerto Rico as new drivers, with no driving experience. As a result driving insurance is extremely expensive.

Anyone have any suggestions or can help in reducing the insurance premuim?

Your contributions will be greatly appreciated

Yes, it is and unfortunately, you need to wait 3 years before those premiums can reduce. We reside in NC and we are also paying the high price of this.

Yes, new drivers pay more but other things determine car inurance rates

check into the rates of a car before you buy it

Some cars cost more to insure than others. Variables include the likelihood of theft, the cost of the car itself is major rate factor, the cost of repairs, and the overall safety record of the car. Engine sizes, even among the same makes and models, can also impact insurance premiums. Cars with high quality safety equipment might qualify for premium discounts.

Insurers not only look at how safe the car is to drive and how well it protects occupants, they also look at the potential damage a car can inflict on another car. If a specific car has a higher chance of inflicting damage on another car and its occupants, some insurers may charge more for liability insurance.

age and gender also play a factor

other factors are where the car is kept (in a garage or on a street)

and how many miles you drive in a week

see if you can change any of the above factors to get a decent quote and check all companies / not just the one you are use to

Thanks for the replies.

Can anyone recommend a provider that is reasonable given the circumstances.

Frustrating, as I had 15+ years No claims insurance in the UK.

Go to an insurance agency. They can give you quotes. Often for more then one company. No one here can really tell you which company is going to be the most affordable for you. It depends on all the factors posted above. Whats a cheap company for me may end up costing you a fortune because we have different situations.

We're in NC too, I am on my husbands policy as according to our agent it has to be that way ( which is weird coming from the uk)

However it means that the pain of being considered a 'new driver' is offset by his existing good insurance record.

The agent advised us to get me a low value car that would not need collision coverage ( no finance) as that would further reduce the premium

Edit to add

His insurer gave me a certificate of cover for the test without any additional premium (State Farm - NOT the cheapest!)

Everything crossed for a smooth and stress free journey

Do you know any one in Canada ?. Ontario will swap out your UK license for an Ontario one automatically, they dont ask for your status in the country and they will maintain your driving experience from the UK, it does take about 10 days to get it in the mail though.
