You have no Credit history established as of yet...applying with big banks B of A, Wells Fargo, Amex etc...will get you denied...

Like some mentioned...Create account with Credit Karma using your social security number...You will be able to see what is your credit worthiness and if there is a credit score for you...If you have score over 600 most likely you will be able to get Capital One credit care with at least $300 limit to start with..If you do apply for one, they will ask about your income...

Credit Karma is safe and checking your credit score does not create hard inquiry in your credit report which is important for you to understand how the credit reporting system works.

Most my credit cards I have were through CK.

Good luck

If your husband has bad credit and added you to his card, you already share the bad credit history

most debit cards have the visa logo, use that

and why a credit card especially with no job? don't answer / just consider this may be a bad decision

to restore or get a good credit rating, find a job, and build a savings account

in the US many are in financial trouble thinking they need a stupid credit card

save for what you want and then buy it

Personal opinion of course / no insult intendied

Excellent advice! If you don't have an income, getting/keeping a decent credit card is a bad idea. Having a job builds credit. Keeping a low balance on a credit card builds credit (hard for many to do if they don't have a job).

You're likely to get a high-interest CC (probably 19-23% or higher). A bad idea. Best to find a lower interest with less available credit. Don't fall into the trap of a credit card company that gives you high interest rates, and then raises your debt limit time and time again. It will not help your credit rating.

As for credit karma and other "free" credit report agencies - be careful. Most of these are nothing but marketing gimmicks. Look at the U.S. government's website for more info. https://www.ftc.gov/faq/consumer-protection/get-my-free-credit-report

I don't know about Credit Karma being a marketing gimmick.. but am sure they make money from someone but definitely not the user. I have been using CK for five years now, nothing is forced on me as a user, I decided to to use them and I think they are very reliable and helpful source of information. They will tell you where you stand as far as credit worthiness whether you have good, average of bad credit and they make recommendation on how to manage your credit and what is a good option for you they offer...this is a good start for people with not perfect credit to find out their credit score for free, credit simulation, credit report and credit cards and loans offer that might apply to you. Like I said, I have five cards I got through CK at low rate and some at 10,000 dollars limit...I would not call CK a gimmick with all what they have to offer to consumer for free...I don't think the Millions of CK member would agree with you...

There are 2 options for you. it is common what you are going through -

1) Try talking to a local/small/ community bank if they will give a cc. you can ask for a secured cc if they are not ready to give you a unsecured one due to no/low credit worthiness.

2) Capital one is famous for giving away secured CC for new residents. try that. that is where i personally started and was able to raise my score. i know have multiple cards and have mailbox loaded with new cc offers.it is just a slow process. you will get there.Good luck.

Thank you for your help,

i always had money without getting a job, and i never had a credit card, i just quit a job and waiting for my last pay check , i have a good bank saving , i just bought a car using money cash, so i dont think i should wait until i get another job to have a credit card while almost everybody has one , i'm not thinking to buy anything because i do buy anything i want just with cash or with my debit card , the REASON WHY I STARTED ASKING FOR CC is the need to build a credit score, if i have a bad credit because i was added in short period to my husband credit card , its no problem , i can resolve the issue ,

CK is different from "get my free credit report", which is a (or was) a gimmick by the credit reporting agencies themselves (Experian being the most notorious). Credit Karma is a separate company that makes money from advertising, similar to mint.com.

And increasing your debt limit does in fact improve your credit score IF your spending doesn't also go up with it (since your utilization % of available credit would go down).

When I moved here in the US (year 2006), I applied and was approved for unsecured CC with Capital One ($300). I was working at the time with no credit history. Fast forward to 2016, I have an excellent credit and still with Capital One (Venture Card) and with a much higher limit. I never had problem with them. I like Capital One because of the no foreign transaction fee. Discover is the same, but is not as universally accepted as Visa.
