Question about tax documents

So the instructions say that I need tax returns... or an IRS certified copy of income tax returns that we filed for the last 3 years or an IRS tax return transcript for the last 3 years.

We entered the US in October 2013 and did not work until 2014 so we did not file taxes for 2013. I only have tax returns for 2014 and 2015. Will our application be denied? Should I just write up an addendum stating the situation? Also, is it necessary to obtain a certified copy or tax transcript? How would I go about doing that and how long does that take?

Thanks in advance!

If you need a copy of your 2014 and 2015 tax returns you can obtain an official copy from the IRS using form 4506. There is a $50 fee per tax return, so you will need to pay $100 for this service. You can also apply for a Tax Return Transcript which is done online and there is no cost. However you should read the instructions carefully about what the USCIS will accept. I do not believe that a transcript is sufficient.

You can find the form 4506 at https://www.irs.gov . You will want to select TOOLS to get the form. You can fill out the form in their pdf format and print out several copies. The address where to mail is in the instructions with the form. If you had your return professionally prepared, then contact your tax preparer. That will be much cheaper.

Best of luck!

Thank you for your response! Yikes, I didn't think it would be that much. I kept a copy for myself after I filed our taxes, but it is not a 'certified copy'. I hope this is sufficient.

for all the various agencies we have used over the past 5 years, USCIS included, we have only ever needed tax return transcripts or tax account transcripts.

these can be downloaded from irs.gov once you have registered with an account from them...
