Change of address after coming to the US

Hi all. I hope somebody here can help me with changing address after the arrival to the U.S..

I came to the U.S. about 3 weeks ago and now need to change my address. For my Social Security Card, I went to the SSA and changed address at their office. Received the card at the new address no problem. For my GC, I've filled out AR-11 form online last week and received a confirmation Email for the submission of my request. I thought that's all I needed to do to have my GC delivered to the correct address but I noticed there's a side note stating:

"If you move after you arrive in the U.S., please update your address. The Form Number used for an address change on a USCIS Immigrant Fee payment is “IVF” or “OS155A”.

I did not see any "IVF" or "OS155A" form when I filled out AR-11 so I went back to the online form and found out that if I have selected "Yes" to the question "Is this change of address for an application or petition currently in progress?" then it will show an additional section asking "Case Information" which allows you to select either "IVF" or "OS155A" from the pull down list. It'll let you enter your receipt# too. Well, when I filled out AR-11, I've selected "No" to that initial question so I did not see this pull down list and now I am confused.

I called USCIS to find out about it but the rep who answered my call was no help. He told me filling out AR-11 should be all I need to do and the confirmation for change of address will take about 30 days. He has no access to my information so cannot see whether my request has been processed or not. He also would not take change of address request over the phone either. He kept telling me to fill out AR-11 and wait for the notification from USCIS to confirm the change. So here I am asking for your help.

1. I have a receipt# for my immigrant fee payment and waiting for my green card to be issued. Is that mean that I have "an application or petition currently in progress"?

2. If the answer to question 1 is "Yes", then which one of form numbers I should've selected? "IVF" or "OS155A"?

I would appreciate it if anyone here can clarify these questions for me to ease my mind.

Thank you!

Hi! Yes, I did receive my green card. However, it was sent to the old address despite change of address request. I was lucky to know someone who lived close to the old address so they got it for me before somebody else got it. The fact is I didn't get the tracking number until my status was changed to "Card was delivered to me by the post office". I checked the tracking number and found out that it was delivered to my old address.

After I posted my question here, I filled out AR-11 again online but this time choosing "currently in progress" since I did not have my green card at that time. Then it allowed me to enter my IOE number to link the address change request to my case. After that, my status showed the change of address request was received, reviewed, approved by the officer and address has been changed. This process took about 4-5 days. According to their history, my green card was mailed a day after the change of address was completed but it seems that the change did not reflect fast enough.

hi! have you received your green card yet? we have the same problem with the change of address

In my case, IOE number was issued when I paid my $165 fee. I happen to have the payment confirmation page printed and the number was shown with my case number. However, it is NOT included the payment confirmation Email. I also heard that you can't go back to the payment portal page to see the number either but I don't know if that is true. In any case, if you don't have the online page printed then you need to call USCIS to find out your IOE number. I know a couple of people who had to go that route to get their IOE number so they can check their status online.

where did you get your IOE number?

Hi! If having a wrong apartment number is the only case for you, then I would go talk to the current resident of that apartment number and ask them to let you know if and when they receive the mail from USCIS. I wouldn't tell them what it is but would tell them it is immigration related and contains very important document.

In my case, apparently the change of address request was not reflected on time before my GC was mailed. I have no idea how long it'll take from "in production" to "mailed" so I cannot help you there. But I received a notification for change of address in regular mail about 3 weeks after I made the change. At this point, I suggest you to keep close eye on the production status and call USCIS for tracking number as soon as it is changed to "mailed".

I believe you need to wait at least 30 days after it is mailed out of USCIS to file I-90. Hope your GC will be delivered to your right address. I know how frustrating this whole thing is.

can you tell me how long it's takes from production to deliver ?

-- I can't help you there. Mine did not show "in production" at all. I checked my status pretty much every few days back then but never saw "in production". One day, the status was changed to "mailed".

How can I get the tracking number ?

-- In my case, I did not get the priority mail tracking number from USCIS until my status was changed to "card was delivered". If you cannot find a priority mail tracking number on your "mailed" status, then call USCIS to find out. If you see the priority tracking number on the "mailed" status page, then you do not need to call USCIS. Once you have that number, you can go to the US Post website and track your mail.

If you filed change of address as soon as you entered the U.S., which is beginning of September according to your timeline, then you may be receiving the confirmation letter in about a week or so. Like I said, I got mine about 3 weeks after I submitted my change of address request. If you get that before the card is mailed, then theoretically USCIS should have your correct address on their record.
