Hi all,

First of all you all are so fabulous. I never could have gotten through preparing all this AOS package without all of you helpful people. :)

I'm adjusting status after marriage to a citizen. I am a female and so is my spouse. We both had a complete name change from the marriage (first and last).

I'm not sure what to put under "wife's maiden name" for the G325a form. First question: are we BOTH each other's wives? (I assume the purpose of the question is "put the former name of whichever person changed their name through marriage," but in this case it's both of us.)

Second question: do I put our entire maiden names or just last? So if my name is currently "Janet Doe", they want my spouse's G325a under current spouse to say "Jane Smith"? That just seems confusing to me. I'm worried it will be confusing to them when they read it as well, especially since BOTH our G325as ask for maiden names.

Any help is appreciated; I hope that's clear!

Congrats! First of all, you need to keep it simple. Confusing the oft-confused is never a good idea. You will need to accommodate the system - the system will not change for you. In our case, my wife kept her maiden name and will continue to do so until we're done with AOS. This has not caused a problem. Make it easy on everyone and change your name later. Less confusion. And it doesn't make any difference to anyone, straight, L, G, B, or T.

Thanks so much for the response! Unfortunately that's not an option; my name is already changed and most of our documentation has my new name (proof of legitimate marriage, all the other forms, etc...). I think that might confuse more, but maybe that's just me.

Could I ignore the whole "maiden name" issue and just put my current name in that box? I mean, they have all the documentation. If they want to know my previous name it's right there in a less confusing format... Trying to avoid an RFE but I'm wondering in this instance if it would be less confusing to them this way. Maybe if I wrote a note?

Did you guys go through a court name change?

You have to disclose all previous names in your g325a and wherever else needed. And you should put your wife's maiden name, meaning the name she had before marrying you. If she had other names besides that, I'd include an attachment with that as well.
