Hi everyone,

My fiance and i have our k1 interview next monday. I got my first b1-b2 visa in 2007 and next year 2008, valid for 10 years. When i applied the first time, my sister who was living in LA and her husband gave me an invitation letter and she says that her husband also sponsored me because he sent his tax returns and other docs to proof thay he was going to.cover my expenses. Anyway...i got approved in 2007 and renewed the visa in 2008.

Now... i am applying for a k1 visa and on the DS160 form i answered that no one has ever made a petition for me before. According to my sister, her husband filed a petition because he sponsored me for the tourist visa.

I'm confused now... i hope someone can help me!

Thanks in.advance

1. There is no such thing as "sponsorship" for a tourist visa. In fact, having someone in the US vouch to cover all your expenses is often used to deny visas as it can show that the person trying to obtain the visa does not resources to allow such a trip.

2. He did not petition for you. He merely provided evidence that I am surprised did not work against you.

Her husband didn't file a petiton; a tourist visa invite counts for nothing, and in any case, is not an immigrant visa.

hi

not true, as stated, there is no such thing as sponsoring a tourist visa, you applied on your own and showed strong ties to your country,

they supported you that's all, which isn't necessary to do since you are the one that has to show that you don't have immigrant intent

sending you support most of the time backfires because it shows that you have somewhere to stay and they can provide for you

the answer is no one has filed a petition on your behalf before

Thank you all for the quick reply.

In fact, i explained to my sister that the tourist visa was approved for my mom and i because met the requirements on our own but she says that back in 2007 rules were different and that, indeed, her husband is our sponsor until now.

I just wanted to verify this info and have it clear for my interview.

It has never been a requirement of a B2 visa for tourists that you have family or friends in the USA. Millions of such visas have been issued to people who have no connection to the country, don't know anyone there, but want to take their kids to Disney world or take a cruise around the Hawaiian islands. In fact, as has already been mentioned in this and countless other threads, having family in the USA who are willing to feed and accommodate you can be a hindrance. Tourists with no connection to the country whatsoever are far less likely to overstay (where would they live? How would they be able to afford to feed themselves?) than people with close family there who love them and will care for them.

Your sister may well have sent documents showing she can afford to keep you during your stay. But they weren't a requirement, nor were they legally binding. There are plenty of urban myths around the Internet, even websites dedicated to the myth, that visitors need a sponsor to visit the USA. Not so.
