Weird. They had the opportunity to shoot him out of the sky and didn't. That was no coup. Erdogan wants to cement his power and this "coup" is what will make it easy for him to do that.

At the height of the attempt to overthrow Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, the rebel pilots of two F-16 fighter jets had Erdogan's plane in their sights. And yet he was able to fly on.

The Turkish leader was returning to Istanbul from a holiday near the coastal resort of Marmaris after a faction in the military launched the coup attempt on Friday night, sealing off a bridge across the Bosphorus, trying to capture Istanbul's main airport and sending tanks to parliament in Ankara.

"At least two F-16s harassed Erdogan's plane while it was in the air and en route to Istanbul. They locked their radars on his plane and on two other F-16s protecting him," a former military officer with knowledge of the events told Reuters.

"Why they didn't fire is a mystery," he said.

Truly feel bad for the thousands whose lives are now ruined(some are dead men walking), because they tried to bring some sanity back to that country. I suspect they didn't expect it to fail, as the last 4 have been successful. Now they are in a world of trouble.

And now there have been thousands of arrests already - a lot of that in the judiciary - which is surprising in speed and scope. This was all pre-planned. I have no doubt. Look back at the 1930's in Germany and you'll find a lot of parallels in how Hitler consolidated his power then. Erdogan is following a script. Believe me.

Following one local reporter on twitter. His entire news station has been taken over by the government, he's been tossed out and has endless death threats. He posted them and said... if anything happens to him or his family.. you'll know who killed them.

This was all staged. Probably one of the most disturbing things of our time.

That is a possibility. However the other possibility is they may have thought that killing him, as opposed to capturing him which was their original plan, might be way too unpopular with the people and have such ramifications that they preferred him alive over dead. At the end well the people weren't with them anyway, but killing him could have infuriated them even more.

It may have been staged. It may have not. I saw reports today of the supposed messages they sent each other on watsapp planning this thing for months, so if it was planned those would all have had to have been fabricated. The other option which I think makes the most sense is they were on to them but decided to wait till they do something with their plan in order to take action. I say this because they actually started the coup several hours before what they had originally planned, due to noticing that they are being followed, etc. It was leaked, they had to act fast, and then authorities acted even faster.
