My childhood friend wants to visit the U.S. Early 30s with a 2 year old boy and a wife living in Hong Kong. He lives in mainland Guangzhou.

He is in the process migrating to HK. He wants to visit all the spots and his sister in NY for about 3 weeks. He is thinking Las Vegas, LA, SF, then NY.

What advise should I give him?

If he genuinely wants to use his visa for touristic reasons, just to visit and then come back he will be fine. Some things to be considered when applying for a B1B2 e.i. tourist visa :

1. He needs to have a stable income or at least some other prove of financial stability in order to prove to the consulate that he will be able to support himself while his trip to the States.

2. He should be able to prove that he has strong enough ties to his home country and that he will be coming back home after his visit to the States.

3. Good command of English will be a bonus.

4. He needs to be confident and relaxed when getting interviewed by the consulate for his visa - they do not want to hear additional life stories etc. He should only answer to what they are exactly asking him. And smile. He should never seem desperate of getting a visa, he should be able to tell them where is he going, what is the purpose of his trip is where is he staying.

5. Having a prove of previous travel history will be another advantage, since they will see that he went back to his country. Other then that he should really be fine. Tell him to just follow the application, don't overdo or overstock on documents they are not asking for. It will be useless and will show that he is desperate to get to the States which is not a good sign in the eyes of consul.

They usually don't ask too many questions unless there is something sketchy about your application or some info is missing. He needs to be clear about his purpose of the trip and as long as he is, most likely won't have any problems. Good luck!
