Hi everyone, please I have some important Questions, and would be glad if anyone could help. I've been in the States for almost a month which I gat here with a K1 Visa and I haven't applied for nothing yet. No SS number, no green card ?, and no job yet. Now my question ❔ is, can I apply for a Social Security number without no permanent resident yet and can I also apply for Food Stamp? Any answer will be well appreciated. Thank you

If your i94 is still valid and you have at least 14 days of validity, you can still go to the social security office and apply for your card. Check their website to get the address and list of documents required.

As for food stamps, I believe you don't qualify to get them.

Are you married yet?

Food stamps you most likely cannot get- it depends slightly which state you are in, and your situation; for example if you are a pregnant female, there may be programs available to you. It could also cause issues with your AOS (Adjustment of Status) and the financial support portion of that.

You really do not want to apply for Food Stamps before you get your GC as it can cause your AOS to be denied.

In RHODE ISLAND you need to list your sponsor....and they have been known to go after them if you get aid from DHS.

YOU have a sponsor to consider where is you fiancee or spouse during this situation?

On the georgia food stamp website, it says that getting food stamp benefit will not hurt your immigration status but take that with a grain of salt. It also says though that certain immigrants with no legal status can't get food stamps.

Even if the site says it "won't hurt your immigration status" they could still use it as a character builder at the interview. Coming into the US and trying to apply for food stamps within a month, shows that your character is that of someone who is willing to use means tested benefits, which is generally a big no no. It's why you provide a sponsor, or a joint sponsor, to avoid you having to be on means tested benefits.

Your spouse can apply for them though, it's their right as a USC to be able to apply, but I would be careful in showing your willingness to do this.

Have you gotten married yet?

And yes, you can apply for a SSN. You can apply for it BEFORE the last two weeks of your I-94 expiring. Take your birth certificate, passport, and I-94 to the SSA office. If you don't apply for it before the last two weeks of your I-94 being valid, you will have to wait until you have your EAD.

I would be cautious. What is ya'lls financial situation?

Well if they are looking to get food stamps my guess is that they can't afford the filling fee.
