My fiance and step-daughter went to their K-1 visa interview on June 28th in RIo de Janeiro, Brazil. The embassy woman said they had been approved and that their passports and packet would come in the mail. After, the brazilian secretary said my step-daughter's birth control needed a better copy, although we had an authenticated original copy she said we needed to send another original copy. The immigration american woman then agreed and said they needed to wait for an original copy to arrive to them before sending out their passports.

We sent it immediately and should arrive at the embassy tomorrow July 13. Anyone have any estimates now how long it will take them to process this and for us to get their visas. I bought their plane tickets for August 12 and now am regretting buying the tickets so soon but due to the olympics in Brazil the prices kept going up and I was agraid that if I didn't buy them early we would miss out.

My step-daughter's school in the U.S. starts on August 24 and we are very concerned. Any help out there with timeline?

Usually it takes 2-4 weks to get the passports back; it can take on the longer side in summer, when embassy staff my be in the USA on vacation. You, as the USC, could call at the end of the week and ask for an update, explain the issue with school starting?

The Consulate in Brazil states that they will mail the passport and she will receive it in at most 7 working days. A lot of people I know said that receiving it is super fast after the approval, and they got it in less than 2 weeks. So I guess you will be receiving it on time. As soon as they get hands on the birth certificate, they will send it out. But you should call them today or tomorrow to make sure they received the birth certificate.

Thank you for the responses so far.

I have called the Brazilian Consulate in Rio and all they say is that it can take up to 60 days to process......they cannot check to see if the documents have arrived or give us a status update until 60 days have passed.......so frustrated.......any suggestions on numbers to contact in Rio?

Thanks again though for the help.....makes me feel good that you guys are saying 2-4 weeks because in other threads people are waiting 6-8 weeks but those are in Brazil

For immigration purposes it says to not call the consulate but only email them (include your case number in the subject line). You should be polite and ask them about the birth certificate. Also, explain that your visa was approved but they are just waiting for this copy to issue it. Don't say too much on the email because from my experience they only give short answers. It takes about 4 days for them to reply.

Since there is no immigration section phone number it's likely that the person who picked up the phone only gave a general answer.

I've dealt with them by email and I can say I got what I want, It just requires a lot of patience and politeness.

Today my status changed from Administrative Processing to Ready. (July 15) It had been as administrative processing since June 28 (after interview)

I was excited about this but my concern is in the text box it says: Your Case is now ready for your interview......etc. and then information on how to scheduel the interview

Considering our interview was on June 28 I was confused, and hoping it's just an automated message and I should disregard? Any suggestions?

The Status just change again!!!

Now it IS non-immigrant and states

Your case is open and ready for your interview, fingerprints, and required documents. If you have already had your interview, please check your status after two business days. If no interview was required, please check back in two business days for the status of your application.

FANTASTIC!!!! Hopefully next week it will change from READY to MAILED

If it's already in non immigrant, it's a good thing. Next will be issued. It won't change to mailed. You'll get an email from the embassy with the tracking number from correios after it changes to issued Edited by p-ana
