As a demonstration against police shootings made its way downtown here on Thursday, it differed from others around the country in one startling way: Twenty to 30 of the marchers showed up with AR-15s and other types of military-style rifles and wore them openly, with the straps slung across their shoulders and backs. In Texas, it was not only legal. It was commonplace.

Never have been . I think it is more of a macho thing. Tactically speaking it's dumb. It just opens the door to all kind of unwanted attention and makes people nervous.

When I was stationed in Texas, I've never personally seen folks open carry in downtown Austin/San Antonia/Dallas Fort Worth. From my take, I think those that do are typically just trying to make a statement and don't actually open carry in their daily life. It's really impractical in my opinion.

that was why i was a bit shocked to hear from cehst posters in tejas who say they've never seen it.
