Options for Mental ill individual

You don't say what country she is in but getting even a tourist visa for a sister is hard

and one with a mental illness, as you say, chances she will pass a medical exam for a visa interview are even slimmer

I am assuming she has been diagnosed as you say you know her illness

she needs treatment where she lives

most treatments in any country for this are poor even in the US

as most do not understand the problems / not even the best of doctors can keep a patient on the right track

the medication has hard side effects and patients stop using as soon as they undertand they can do on their own

sorry for your situation and hers but if they know of illness at time of exam, she will more than likely not get a visa

and her parents are legal guardians as they are alive so going that route is not an option either

good luck

what i say is not to hurt but to be honest from what i have seen immigration do / so sorry

Treatment in the US is not poor for Schizophrenics. They have medications here that no other countries have. They have monthly shots so a person willing to take the medication doesn't have to take it daily or forget to take it.

Passing a medical has nothing to do with mental illness. They see if you have any diseases and ask you pretty easy straight forward questions. As long as she is not a danger and not ALL schizophrenics are dangerous she will pass a medical exam. Mental illness does not keep you from getting a visa. Drug use yes...mental illnesses no and if they see fit that the US can handle her better than her country which I will assume the US can...She may be able to come on a medical visa. No need to discourage OP or make OPs sister sound like she has leprosy.

What's a medical visa? And the OP said her sister is refusing any treatment.

Regardless, it will be about 12 - 20 years before her sister can get a visa for the US anyway. Best option is to try to convince the sister to get help while she is in her own country first and worry about treatments in the US later.

As I previously stated my sister is a schizophrenic, so I just want to point out again that meds can be expensive, not everything is covered by insurance, and it can be challenging to find meds or a combo of meds that will be effective. Not all meds work for all people. For example the monthly shot meds you refer to are not an option in my sister's case.

That's fine and you can point out whatever you would like. The reason I quoted what someone else said not you was because the person was making sound as if schizophrenia is some horrible disease like leprosy. Not all medications work everyone all the time but the USA is far more advanced than many other countries when it comes to mental health treatment. Many other countries don't even have names for half the mental health issues. Many don't provide the right meds and many countries lock mentally ill people away. My neighbor gets disability for his schizophrenia and every last one of him 14 medications are covered. Not sure where you are from but it maybe something you want to look into.

I'm from NY, and we have looked into everything. Have some of the best treatment facilities nearby, unfortunately insurance is always an issue. Just because a med is covered or hospital is covered or doctor is covered does not make it cheap. Also although I am not a practicing mental health caregiver, I have completed extensive studies in the area. It would probably be helpful if the OP answered the question of where her sister is living so we could potentially give more comprehensive answers.

It has been quite some time since Immibie posted before this topic was created, but with some creative googling, I was able to find the country to most likely be Cambodia.

With that being the case, the medical treatment options in Cambodia are definitely lacking, especially for this circumstance.

While this is definitely the case, treatment for Mental Health issues is still a good 50 years behind physical health care in any 1st world country. (At least) And treatment for schizophrenia is a big hit and miss. IMO the real question is whether this would be a positive move for all parties involved. A very likely scenario is that the sister is already too far gone to be able to take advantage of better treatment. Not to mention the cultural and language barrier that will hinder treatment here in the USA. Also, how does the family back home feel about the move? If they are not on board a move like this could cause a rift and make everyone miserable involved.

Although I admire the OP's noble intentions, just getting through the immigration process alone would prove to be a nightmare as others here have already mentioned. This is a case of being able to do far more with far less, making the sister as comfortable as possible in her own country.
