I have to travel abroad next week and my Green Card has already expired. I got my extension letter with me.

What else do I need to bring with me other than the Green Card, extension letter, and passport?

Technically those 3 things are all you need. IMHO I would also suggest you print a copy of this and keep it on you just in case airline staff give you trouble when you try to get back to the United States. In paragraph 4, CBP clearly states that passengers should be able to board with the extension letter. Hopefully this assuages any skeptic airline official, should you ever face one. Happy traveling!

I wish the CBP officers were ALL aware of this. It is ridiculous that a traveler would have to keep them abreast of their own rules. :(

Yes, you will be able to enter US with the extension letter. However, that doesn't mean that it will be seamless entry for every person holding that document and on every airline.



I have traveled extensively (Europe-Asia-Latin America) on the expired greencard along with extension letter. It absolutely depends on the education of the airline employee and the CBP personnel. There is no consistency. I consider, these extension letters are in place for decades (as I was informed by CBP), however, not everyone is educated to consider it as valid document. Airline or CBP then just have call for their supervisor to validate...this causes delays. I suggest, giving yourself plenty of time.



There could be worst case scenario (incident was in 1 out of 17 trips that I took) as well. One of the European airline didn't let me board because they did not understand the document. Since, I was traveling on business, I was able to get a ticket on another airline in few minutes.

Hi , i'm asking because i will travel too with expired green card, what do you mean by copy of this? do you mean we should take with us : passport +expired green card+ extension letter + the page, i'm right? the page talk about different situations
