Hello all VJers,

I have recently become US citizen in Jan,2016. I just applied to get US passport and its is process. My plan is to get Indian tourist visa for me and my wife( US citizen by birth) as I have heard that it is cheaper and faster. My Indian passport was renewed couple years earlier and is valid till 2020. In this scenario I am trying to determine what would be the cost for the renunciation. These are the sources :

Indian consulate website says "Those who acquired foreign nationality after June 1, 2010 and their Indian passports were valid for more than 3 years at the time of acquiring the foreign nationality are liable to pay a penalty of US 250/- in addition to normal fee of US $ 178/-. Is this true ?

CKGS website has no info on the cost unless you fill in your US passport number in the form and proceed. I am still waiting on my US passport.

Another source online says "Naturalized on or after June 1, 2010 - $178 + $12 = $190.

1) Which is a correct fee in my situation ?

2) As far as i have seen only photocopies of main documents are necessary for renunciation. Is this true ?

All help and suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

$178 is the cost for renunciation.what the third party website is now saying is matching what you stated in your question. which means $250 + $178 to surrender.

The way i always understood this is described below -

1) if you used Indian pass to travel after been a USC for 3 months or in other words for example- you became a citizen in january, did not surrender your indian citizenship and still using indian pass to travel starting April (3 months) it is $250/travel and goes up to $1250

2) if i understood your question right, Submit copies of everything and the original indian pass.

i would suggest you to call the local consulate or email them for clarification.the story to me does not add up.keep us in loop and congratulations for becoming an american.

i did it last year and i guess it was around $190 with the return shipping ( i am not sure though)

for renunciation you will have to submit your indian passport

you can get an estimate of renunciation here

https://www.in.ckgs.us/fee/renunciationfee-calculator

you will get indian evisa in 2 days after you have submitted your application online

just printout the email after they send you the visa

validity only 30 days

Hi guys, i have a question pertaining to the renunciation topic.

My wife came to the us in 1993 and became naturalized in 2003. Her Indian passport was stolen (still not clear on the date on exactly when) and they didn't have any photocopies of the passport so for all purposes, as of today, we have no details about her passport (date of issue, expiration, passport #, etc.)

I am filing for her renunciation, but because i do not have the Expiration Date of most recent Indian Passport, CKGS is charging her $250 fee because of the following:

"if you last held indian passport expires after Jan 1, 2005 and if more than 3 years have passed between naturalized date and today's date, $250 penalty applies"

Is there anything else i can do to avoid the $250 fee?

Thanks in advance!
