Hughes, like almost half of Texas residents, owns a firearm and can legally carry it in public places. On January 1 of this year, a newly passed law made Texas the 45th state to allow people to publicly carry firearms. When the law went into effect, hundreds of white Texas celebrated by openly carrying their rifles around Austin — to the convenience store, through the streets, and on the Capitol steps.

The police response to Hughes — whose photo appears to have been plastered on social media and on the news as a suspect not because of his weapon, but because of his race — is yet another example of the racial divide in our country’s gun laws. When a white person owns a gun and uses it for self defense, he’s labeled a “good guy with a gun.” When a black person does the same, however, he’s considered suspicious. And the National Rifle Association will not come to his defense.

The NRA has not responded to either of the high-profile police shootings this week — both of which occurred because the black man allegedly had a gun. Before he died in Minnesota on Wednesday night, Castile specifically told the officer that he was armed and had a legal license to carry, but was shot and killed anyway. And on Tuesday, Alton Sterling was restrained and pinned to the ground after an officer yelled: “He’s got a gun! Gun!” An officer shot him in the back and chest several times before another officer pulled the gun out of his back pocket. In Louisiana, where Sterling lived, a license is not required to openly carry a firearm.

Like Sterling and Castile, Hughes was legally carrying a firearm — he had not fired the gun, or threatened anyone with the gun. Under the NRA’s vision of an armed and happy country, he was a model citizen.

But like Sterling and Castile, he is black, so his possession of a weapon made him a criminal.

Discuss politely.

Pointless exercise discussing all this really.

We all know the injustices, the discrimination etc etc.. This WILL continue no matter what people bleat on about online (includes me!) or on tv news coverage.

Until there is such a fundamental shift in the American psyche that not all cops are bad and not all black people are bad you you will continue to have incidents like this. I'm not talking about the massacre mind as that has no excuse or can describe as extenuating circumstances as it was a planned attack.

The shift in mentality is huge!! It's not easy but face the difficulties and let all sides make every effort to change.

This latest attack is terrorism domestic at that. Pure anarchy that has to be halted.

It's beyond asking the NRA to jump into the matter as what good can come from their quotes? Look at the disease so ingrained in society that people resort to this.

What would help is like the governor of Minnesota did, condemn this action... You don't need to wait for justice to be served first to say that it was wrong. No gun was pulled on this trigger happy officer.

Police chiefs also need to throw full weight behind actions of rouge criminals hiding behind a badge and some are just that!

You recruit 800,000 people into a company you don't think some of those will be bad apples? Thugs? Criminals? Racists? Of course there would be! Root out these ppl and allow the majority of honest hard working officers do their jobs to the best of their ability.

The issue is and always will be, the NRA is all about arming CERTAIN people here in the US. Had these people been white men, first and foremost, these incidents might not have even occurred since police tend to use more restraint, but if they did go down exactly the same, there would have been outrage about this on every level. But since it continues to be black men under questionable circumstances, they won't stick their neck out.

this is what i've been saying (the bold part). this perception doesn't mean a person is racist, only that the person has been conditioned. shows like cops, the first 48?..conditioning. a little fun game, search google american white kids with guns. then search american black kids with guns. besides the main comparison graphic..that has language so can't post.. vastly different results.

the nra isn't going to make the majority of their members angry, as any support of blm or black victims in general is taken as a hatred of police/law&order.

and there's this i guess..http://www.naaga.co/

Hit the nail on the head. Folks can't be anti-police brutality without being anti-police. And since there is practically no sympathy for black people when these things occur, it only serves to add fuel to the fire.

Like Sterling and Castile, Hughes was legally carrying a firearm

In the case of Sterling, with two previous gun charges, registered sex offender on the state website (diddling a 14-yr-old girl), and a conviction for domestic battery he had no business and no right to either possess or carry a gun under the VAWA.

He had a 20-yr unbroken history of crime up to his drug charges a month before he was shot for threatening someone with the gun that he has no business carrying.

I really take offense when liberals try to mold this man into some kind of victim because of his skin color. He threatened someone with a deadly weapon and got shot while the cops were trying to take him down for doing it. Good riddance.

As to the guy in MInnesota, that looks like a flat out case of murder and the sooner they convene the grand jury the better.

As for Hughes, do you seriously believe it is unreasonable to want to question a man dressed like this and walking around like this with an assault rifle right before someone opened up and started shooting police officers with an assault rifle? He was questioned, cleared, and let go.

It does and is doing the black community no good at all to lump every interaction with every black person equally

Rubbish. I can find a ton of videos on youtube of white guys carrying around rifles getting stopped and hassled by police.

Good luck!

Perfectly reasonable. Already we're hearing calls for more gun control. As usual that is all washington can do, and I called it in the thread from this morning.

There will be another spike in gun and gun part sales today, which if you're a gun owner or aspiring gun owner is a logical response to this, because I do believe we're going to see another AWB. If it's like the last one, parts and guns will be grandfathered.

Good luck!

Rubbish. I can find a ton of videos on youtube of white guys carrying around rifles getting stopped and hassled by police.

And there are tons of videos of white guys going to the cops and basically daring them to try and infringe on their rights to bear arms.

But then again, you'd be better served finding videos where white men with guns are shot and killed on video for carrying. I mean, right after Sandy Hook, a dude went into JC penny's with an assault rifle on his back, and somehow he survived. Funny how that works. I wonder if a black person can go in a store in Dallas after what has transpired and do the same thing.

First, I can also find videos of armed black men encountering cops and not being killed, just like white, but...

Trivia time!

In 2015 unarmed black men made up what percentage of people killed by cops:

1) 4%

2) 14%

3) 24%

4) 34%

4) 44%

2. My turn, why don't you find 2 videos of white men being shot by the police for just being armed. Bonus points if you can find one where a white man is shot right in front of his SO with child present. I'll wait...
