Hi,I just want to share my experience so other people can learn from it.

I came here with K1 visa, got married within 90 days.. .everything was going smooth until i get too comfortable and forgot to apply for my social til a week before my visa expires(which is no longer accepted). I thought it was ok, i`ll do it when i get my EAD and friend of mine says it`ll only take 1-2 weeks. I submitted my AOS application together with a permit to work and travel. Meanwhile,i studied the driving manual, along with staying alone in the house, being depressed 5 days a week, while my husband is at work I was so happy when i finally receive my EAD card thinking i can finally take my driving exam and hopefully work(btw you cant take your driving exam without your social, i already tried it). I applied for my social a week after i got my EAD hoping i would receive it within 2 weeks. Now here i am, on my 4th week of impatiently waiting for my SSN. I called the local Social Security Office yesterday, and told me that the office of homeland(something like that) hasnt send information and the reason why its getting delayed... *sigh *sigh

So yeah.. .

Also, today i am celebrating my 7th month of being here in United States(yay! yay!).

If you have the EAD in your new married name, then I do not see what the hold up is with DHS. Maybe go back to the SSA, get someone else and attempt to find out why you cannot get the SSN with the proper govt. ID(EAD). Take copy of your marriage certificate along with passport too.

I know when my wife changed the name on her SSC using the EAD it took longer than it did initially (about 10 days initially, and about five weeks with the EAD). I am not sure why that was the case, but hopefully you get your card soon. As to the frustration of waiting, my wife went through a similar experience. I did as much as I could to help her out, we got a puppy to give her some companionship while I was at work, she met some new people from Russia in th area, and I did as much as I could to help her adjust. It is not easy adjusting to a new living situation, but again be patient.

Good Luck!

Thank you everyone for your comments and suggestions.

The loneliness is inevitable, especially with a huge change of environment, culture and lifestyle. I`ve gotten better with it.. .i tried to be busy cleaning, walking the dog around the block, gardening and joined meetup. I just would really want to learn how to drive, get a job,and not be dependent with my husband all the time.

There's still no update on my social.

The lady that i spoke to,the first time asked me to call again and so i did. The supervisor told me that they are waiting to hear from the immigration, and would contact them by monday. She asked me to call back by tuesday. ..

I had the same issue, oh my God! I applied for change of my married name in SSN the same day I received EAD, and it took them soo long - about 1 month. DMV does not consider application if there is no perfect match with SSN database, so they could see I have new family name, my marriage certificate but in SSN database there was still my maiden family name, so I got denied. Now finally received and social security card and driving permit. Good luck with DMV applications and tests!!!

Hoping folks might help me too. Ok, I have been begging for answers and no one knows anything and they finally starting trying to say bad things to us. So husband entered on K1 on 4/23/16 and we married on 4/25/16 and filed AOS on 5/18/16.

They are still reviewing our case and so we don't have the green card (LPR) or the red card (EAD) yet. We thought we were smart and got him a state ID (not a DL) but it expired with the K1 Visa on 7/21/16 And now the I-94 has expired too. We didn't know you could apply for the SSN if you didn't have the EAD or LPR (red/Green cards). I don't know how I missed that info on VJ. I didn't think you needed a SSN unless you were going to work.

So we can't get anyone to give us the health insurance because they want the social security number and the SS office asked if we had some I-551 or something stamped in the passport and I said NO. What is that anyway? I'm very ignorant here lately.

My work wants $800 a month to add him onto my insurance so that is a NOGO but even if I wanted to add him they said I waited too long. It was a 30 day window for my work. And they want a SSN. So I called the marketplace but they said I also waited too long. They have a 60 day window and they want a SSN too. Now I have found another qualifying event that could allow us to get coverage in the Marketplace (I just got a new job with a new salary) but how do I deal with not having the SSN? HELP!

When I called the local SS office they asked if I could get an I-94 extension. I didn't know so I called USCIS and they referred me to Border Protection and they wanted to say he was here illegally! Which of course we know is untrue because we have filed the AOS. But exactly how do you prove you are here legally during this time. So many people are clueless and everybody wants to be an immigration specialist.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

First, you should probably ask a moderator to move this to a separate thread since the situation is different from the original question. This will help you get more constructive answers.

As to the SSN, you will need to wait for the EAD which hopefully will show up in a week or so based on current processing times of around 90 days, and your filing date. Don't take immigration advice from the SSA as they generally have no clue of this process. I have never heard of an I94 extension from a K1. Just stay patient, and hopefully your husband's EAD will show up soon and you can continue your journey.

The only proof of a legal stay during adjustment, is the NOA you received after you filed the package along with the marriage certificate.

Good Luck!
