What can be used to prove my current status if I don't get the stamp?

Well, that's the issue, isn't it? Yes, you can use your expired green card and the extension letter, but technically once your extension letter has expired (one year after your green card expired), you are still a legal permanent resident, but you do not have proof of your current status. That's why many of us are opting to get the stamp. However, if you're unlikely to need proof of your status, you aren't required to obtain the stamp to retain your status.

One recurring question that I see in this forum is about proving status for employment purposes. The information I will provide here is based on my own knowledge and experience. You do not have to provide a green card or a passport with I-551 stamp along with the I-9 form. If you present an unexpired drivers license and an unrestricted social security card, your employer cannot request to replace any of these documents nor any additional documents, either upon hiring or during the employment. If they do anything if these things, they may be found liable for discrimination. Once the HR department of where I used to work asked for the greencard and I respectfully declined and offered my unrestricted social security card instead. They never said anything to that and I know they talked to an attorney about it(i saw the bill). And that was the greencard that they helped pay for. When I moved to a different job, again it was just the unexpired drivers license and unrestricted SS card and they never asked me for anything else. One may ask, what about E-verify? Well, E-verify only compares whatever information was provided so if you don't provide a greencard, there's no way to confirm it's expiration date.

I hope this helps.

This is true, and we've talked about it a lot. Since some states will not issue a full-term driver's license without a full-term (10yr) green card, many people will (even if they're only showing a driver's license and Social Security Card) have to get the stamp in order to obtain an unexpired driver's license. It's ridiculous (since when is the DMV the arbiter of our immigration status?) but there you have it.

Is your timeline updated?

I agree with Lemon23, I spoke to Immigration officer today because I changed my address. So it also gave me a chance to check the status of my application which will be 1 year tomorrow. So, he told me CSC is a little slow and I will need to wait for 1.5month more and also, I asked him if I need a stamp and he told me, if I would like to have stamp I can but not necessary if i will not travel out of US or if My employer needs it, other than the two mentioned he told me I should be fine even after expiry and not having my passport stamp.

In my state, once I got the conditional card, I got a new drivers license expiring in five years and an unrestricted social security card in the same month. I guess this is the way things are over here since I moved once since then and got a new drivers license with the same expiration date so as far as employment goes, the CSC has a few years to look into my case 😀.

i just check my inform delivery usps and i see a envelop from uscis .  is a year tomorrow since i don't  hear nothing.

Most likely an approval. Approvals do not cause a case status update online until your card production is ordered.

~AOS : 09/11/2014 - 2 YR Green card received!.

~ROC 07/13/2017 - 10 YR Green card received!.

~N-400 : 10/28/2020 - N400 Interview & Approval/Oath Ceremony/US Citizen!

Yes, my attorney said I-551 stamp is just additional measure. Expired GC and expired letter wdon't make you staying in the US illegal. You are still eligible for work and travel. However, not sure how it works with am employer and custom officers. I am sure the employer can verify it through e-Verify and the officers on the border can see it in computers or make requests. But would you want to struggle hard times of getting verified?

If you happen to be in a state that issues you a drivers license with normal expiration date irrespective of your GC situation, you can submit it along with your unrestricted social security card for I-9 verification purposes. In that scenario, the only immigration information that the I-9 form would have is the A- number. But considering that LPR status can't be lost once the GC and/or extension letter expired, E-verify wouldn't show somebody ineligible to take employment in the US.

I'm glad someone has already answered the question I was about to post.

My extension letter is now expired (I'm incredibly annoyed about the snail's pace CSC is going) and I was wondering if I needed to miss work, drive 250mi, pay for gas, food and lodging just to get a stupid stamp on my passport. The nearest field office isn't even in my state. Glad to know ICE won't come knocking at my door for having expired everything. I just don't have the time and resources to deal with this ish right now.
