Three months before expiration day, or three months after? I've heard plenty of people report not being able to get a stamp more than one month before the expiration of the letter, but this is the first I've heard of a potential time limit after expiration, so just double-checking. Thanks! :-)

There is no time limit after expiration. Any time after 30 days before expiry (which some officers have decided to override based on the reasons why we need the stamp "early") until the petition has actually been approved (I read somewhere that someone had an Infopass appointment and the officer said that the petition was showing in their system as approved, so they didn't issue a stamp, since the applicant would have received their card before whatever travel they had booked) you can get the stamp.

Is your timeline updated?

You're right in that they often won't give the stamp too far in advance. But that wasn't the question. Can you get the stamp after the extension's expiry? Yes. Do you need to get it at all? Possibly not, if you're not planning to travel outside the US, and if you have a full-term driver's license. With a valid driver's license and a SSN, you can get a new job without needing your green card/letter/stamp at all.

You would need a stamp if your work place requires I-9 verification.

AOS approved on 7/31/2014. Took 116 days.

ROC approved on 10/26/2017. Took 463 days / 15 months 2 weeks.

07/12/16 Package (I-751) sent to CSC through USPS Priority Mail Express (Overnight)
07/13/16
(Day 001) USCIS confirmed receipt.
07/15/16
(Day 003) Personal check cashed out.

07/18/16 (Day 006) NOA1 (mail) received. NOA dated 07/13/16.

07/21/16 (Day 009) NOA2 (mail) received. NOA2 for biometrics, ASC appointment notice.

08/04/16 (Day 023) Biometrics appointment . Done!

07/05/17 (Day 358) Infopass appointment for I-551 stamp on passport.

07/14/2017 (Day 367) still waiting for approval.... ugghh...

10/13/2017 (Day 458) CSC processing time is current.

10/18/2017 (Day 465) Filed service request with USCIS Customer Service.

10/26/2017 (Day 463) Received email alert. Card in Production.

I brought the original NOA letter whenever I travel, I always ensure it's clipped together with my passport and Green Card. And I have scanned copies on my email/phone (retrievable offline), and hard copies along with me. I was paranoid, and I wanted to make sure I had back up copies, and that, if I were the officer validating credentials, I would be certain to take more time to validate the copies vs. the originals. that's just me.

Anyway, I traveled few countries in the past year, Amsterdam, Paris, Morocco, and South east Asia. Did not have issues with Schiphol airport (Amsterdam). But I almost missed my flight out of Marakesh (Morocco) heading back to state side, because the check-in counter would recognize the extension letter, and insisted the date on my green card had expired. I had to point and read out the sentence where the extension date was noted on the letter. The lady over the counter had to call in her supervisor, who then had to call someone who validated from US CBP/USCIS website, that the letter, is listed as one of the approved travel document into US.

Thank you for this advice.  I was wondering about using a copy rather than the original.  Now we all know to keep the original with us.

Actually, you don't. If you read the instructions on the I-9, you can use a driver's license and your social security card as acceptable ID. And they are legally prohibited from insisting you use a particular ID, unless that's all you have. Green Card/US Passport/Citizenship Form OR Driver's license and SSN (as long as the SSN doesn't have any conditions on it, which we should all have by now).

I work for a government agency and they asked for my GC when I got hired a year ago. I had a valid state dl, and have ssn. Even if it's not a must, I would suggest to get it.

It depends on the company's requirement. My company asks for it. And, unfortunately, DMV (California) tags your driver's license expiration date with the date on your immigration IDs (greencard, or visa on passport), at least in California. I read somewhere on this forum few others mentioned the same thing. However, you pointed out SSN. I totally overlooked that option, and my SSN has no conditions on it. That'll work for me. thanks!

After stamping my passport they kept my expired GC. When I asked if I could have it back, they said there is no reason for me to have an expired document when I have the stamp on my passport, valid for a year, that has the same function. So they kept my GC.

I woulda been so pissed off if they had retained my expired GC. I know the stamp serves the same purpose as the GC but still the document is mine...
