Should I be in a rush to make an infopass appointment? The DMV gave me a full-term driver's license that's valid beyond the expiration date of my extension letter, but I plan on traveling after my extension letter expires. Everyone says that the California Service Center is extremely backlogged, and there are appointments available 2 and a half hours away for next week.

EDIT - I had to go outside of my zip code for this one. Would that invalidate my appointment? The field office within my zip code didn't have any appointments.

What should I do? My status doesn't expire until September.

Let me know. Thanks!

You cant take it now if it makes you feel better. I did it and will go on mine soon. Once there, we will see what they say.

Thank you for the advice, Warren. That is what I did this Monday. I checked the website at about 7:20 am and I have found appointment for the same day at 9:40 am. It worked perfectly. I changed my address on the application with the lady at the window. She did not want the change of address form I had filled in online. She asked me to write the new address down for her and she put it in the system.

Regarding my DL expiring on 11/30, most likely before I get my 10-year GC, she said I must come a week before 11/30 and they will give me a stamp so I can extend my DL.

I will aim for an appointment on 11/23 and I have to go to the DMV the same day, since afterwards it's the holidays, so that'll be fun.

So best time to schedule InfoPass Appointments is around 7:20 am if you want to find appointment maybe even for same day.

When I checked at 7 am there were none for the same day. So if you are not looking for same day, then you can do it at 7 am already. They take a few minutes to see which time slots they have left for the day and post them.

I'm totally with you. This process is unbelievably frustrating!

You should, however, be able to go to visit your family in Japan with the combination of your wife's expired green card and extension letter, which extends her status until the one year anniversary of her green card expiration date. (Of course she'll still need her passport to enter Japan, but the card+letter will allow her to return to the US.) The DMV should also have accepted that as enough to get her a DL/State ID. You need to be patient and willing to explain the situation to some DMV staff calmly - I know it's hard. But she is still a permanent resident and the policy is that she should be able to get all the benefits associated with that, even while her petition for removal of conditions is pending.

I'm sure you've already tried this... but just to be on the safe side, have you attempted to make an appointment just after midnight? That seems to be when they add the new day's worth of appointments, 2 weeks out from the current date. A lot of people have had luck by doing that, with a busy office. Some people have even tried a walk-in and while they haven't been able to just "walk in" they have been able to make an appointment while they're there.

Alternatively, is there anywhere else that your wife could attend a USCIS appointment other than NYC and NJ? If you really need the I-551 stamp to make a trip to Japan, I would do a search for other USCIS offices that you could take a train to from NYC and see if any of them have appointments available. If it means getting to see aging parents again, the trip to a more distant office would be well worth it, in my mind.

Stay strong and good luck.

Thank you for all your help!

I just went to the Albany USCIS office today for my infopass appointment.

I did confirm with the officer (multiple times) that the extension letter extends the expiration date of the green card by one year. The officer read the sentence to me offering the exact same rationale as what posters here have written (that the letter's wording implies that the card's expiration date is the date that is being extended).

It does NOT extend one's status for one year from the letter date.

The officer also explained that my wife is not entitled to the I551 stamp until two weeks of the new expiration date.

So with the extension letter and expired green card, some foreign airport ticketing agents may complain, but rest assured that we are in the right, he said.

Lastly, he said our application was being processed by an agent since a couple weeks ago, so the GC should be coming soon (no guarantee or estimate of date tho).

Again, thanks everyone and hope this gives some ppl comfort.

Thanks for the info. Obviously there have been conflicted reports on that. It makes sense that the letter should extend the expiration date of the conditional green card, but many bloggers have told us they got different information from the officer who was assisting you. Can you tell us what center did you file to?

Ok, Vermont at least is approving people whereas CSC seems to have just stopped. Good luck.

Well you are in for a long wait. They are currently adjudicating the first week of June 2016 filers.

Since November 2016, they have been averaging 3 weeks filings every 7 months. If this continues, expect to see an approval by Mid to the end of 2018.

My NOA1 is June 10, 2016 so it's 1 year 1 month for me and I'm still waiting (with majority of June filers).

~AOS : 09/11/2014 - 2 YR Green card received!.

It might take even longer now. Might have to wait for N400 interview and be 751 approved at the same time..I am going to apply for N400 end of July regardless of 751. Have confirmed with my lawyer and USCIS that you can apply for 400 when 751 is still pending.

Hi Everyone!

I've been following this forum intently and more specifically this post, but haven't posted anything... I'm also a fellow July 2016 I-751 filer!

Received date, 7/5/16. NOA 7/16/16. Biometrics about a month later.

Two days ago I went into my local office for an Infopass... after waiting and waiting and waiting for my turn, the lady looked at my paperwork, told me to go sit back down in the waiting area, I waited and waited and waited some more, and she finally got back to me with a stamped passport, good until July 2018.

Crossing my fingers for a speedy process for all of us!

I also plan on filing N400 as soon as I hit my three years, regardless of I-751 approval.
