We were in that situation last month: Out of the country when my wife's I751 was approved. We came back in just fine about 2 weeks later with the expired green card + extension letter. The new green card was waiting at home.

 

Congratulations.

I'm the USC petitioner. My wife is British (now a USC!!!), generally awesome, and amazingly patient.

@amandammarksCongrats! Can you give us more details on the approval? Did you see your status change online directly to "card in production" today? Can you see/tell us the date of NOA approval?

Yay! Congrats! 

I don't think they'll give you a hard time. The stamp constitutes a green card, and while they might be able to see that the new green card was sent, they'd have no way of knowing whether you'd received it. (which, technically, you haven't, even if it's sitting in your mailbox!)
