Hi! I have an infopass appointment next week because I didn't get my greencard yet and I need to get my diploma from the Philippines so that I could start school this October. My I-551 stamp just expired and I was wondering if you know how long it takes for them to approve the extension of my stamp? Do they get the passport and mail it to you or you get stampped at the same day? Thanks appreciated!

Do you have an "I-551 stamp" (one that you went to the USCIS office and they put separately into your passport)? Or do you have an immigrant visa that automatically turned into an I-551? What do you mean it "expired"? An I-551 stamp expires 1 year after they gave it to you. The I-551 that the immigrant visa turned into expires 1 year after you entered the US on that visa. So do you mean it has been 1 year and you have still not received your card?

I have an immigrant visa with a stamp on it but it says on my passport that it expires July 7 of this year. I got here in the States last year August and we weren't told that there was a fee for the greencard, we only knew about it when we called USCIS last Febuary 11, so we paid. Its been 5 months now and I haven't received anything yet. If I only knew that I can travel outside the USA using the stamp, I could have gotten my papers from the Philippines way back. I was wondering if they allow extensions and if it takes long for them to stamp my passport with the I-551 stamp?Thank you so much for your reply, very much appreciated!

If you entered last August, then your immigrant visa acts as an I-551 until this August. It doesn't "say" anywhere when it expires (you may be referring to the date the visa expires? or something else?); rather, it's automatically 1 year from the date of entry.

You should get an "I-551 stamp" from a USCIS office at this point. They should give it to you on the spot.

I can see on my passport one that says "IV EXPIRES ON" So thats not the expiration of the stamp itself? Great then! If I entered the States Aug 19 of last year, then my stamp is good till the 19th of August? But I'm still thinking about getting my stamp extended since I don't want to worry about anything when I get back. I was wondering if you know what papers should I bring to get my stamp extended?

The expiration date of the immigrant visa is irrelevant; it was a single-use visa anyway. The I-551 that the visa turned into is for 1 year since entry.

As I said earlier, you should get an I-551 stamp. There is no "extension". You get a separate stamp in your passport, which you are entitled to as a permanent resident who is waiting for a green card.

Oh I see now.. Thank you. So once I pass by an Immigration Officer in the airport, I'll just show them my passport with the stamp and I should be good?
