Great news! So there is hope for my husband after all? I swear he will NOT learn how to drive in my car. We went for a "practice" drive a few months back....almost ended up in the school playground! The neighbors learned new words from me that day.

IK HOU VAN JOU, MARK

.png

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

I can positively confirm, that teaching a spouse how to drive does have the side effect of enhancing one's vocabulary pool.

She wanted to solely practicve the specifics of the test and then take it while I insisted she gets some real hours behind the wheel on a real road and in real traffic (the skill test takes place exclusively on one large parking lot) to gain a general comfort level with opertaing a vehicle. Once you get more comfortable with the vehicle in general, the maneuvers you need to be able to perform for the skill test are so much easier to learn.

Oh yeah...that makes sense, for sure.

Is it better to teach them yourselves or 'hire it out'.

I really don't think I have the patience for it.......

I tried the DIY at first but that was a disaster. I then hired a teacher for a total of 10 hours (roughly $500.00 and well worth it) to help Nani get over the fear of being the one solely in control of the vehicle. The extra set of pedals that the driving instructor has in the vehicle do a lot for a student's peace of mind, I guess. Those 10 hours were sufficient for her to gain enough confidence to then get back on the road with me. So, at the end of the day, we did a mix of both.
