Good morning, VJers!

I received my biometrics appointment letter in the mail for my I-751 (green card renewal). When I did my biometrics before I received my green card a couple of years ago, my US citizen spouse did not need to attend the appointment for biometrics. I just wanted to confirm, again, that the US citizen spouse still will not need to attend for this biometrics appointment as well. Is this correct? Also, do we get a new green card issued with the renewal extension date on it? I received a letter prior to the biometrics letter saying my green card had been renewed for 1 year.

The US spouse never needs to attend the biometrics appointment.

Yes, you get a new GC with a 10-year extension. Mine was actually extended 10 years and a few days. The 1-year extension is to accommodate the processing time.

Okay, thanks to you both for the info! I was fairly certain he didn't need to come since the letter didn't state, but I've learned with this whole process to never assume anything.

@RodDetroit - it has taken 7+ months and still no new Green Card yet?

@Cheezees - how long did it take after biometrics were taken for you to get your green card?

Second question: if it does take several months to get the new 10-year green card in the mail, I presume we can still travel with the green card we do have as long as we also carry the extension letter? I have no plans to do extended travel but we do frequently travel to Canada to visit my family.

CSC got my paper work on dec 3rd and still nothing, they took my bio-metrics in January. A lot of people are in my same situation, I think this type of immigration requests are not a priority and thats why they sent you a letter saying you are good for another year. you can travel and work with your expiered greencard and the letter without issues.

Your US spouse does not need to be there, the process is supposed to take 6 months but i have been waiting for mine over 7 months, it may take less time for you because you are Canadian.

No, no data supports that hypothesis , Canadian filers move faster than other nationalities.

the US government would never confirm that, however Canada and the US are part of the "5 eyes" which is an agreement between the US, Canada, UK , Australia and New Zealand to exchange information not spay on each-other.

I (and many other people) received our green cards in about 3 months. Now it's triple that time? Ridiculous!

Yes, terrible, if it's true. Maybe us Canucks get processed faster? As long as I can travel on my soon-to-expire greencard WITH the extension letter, I am okay with that. But still, a 9 month wait is a LONG TIME. I see, though, they process athletes and celebrities in 2 weeks' time, so it just shows that if you have money and a large social status, you can bypass the lineup :protest:

I know they do :). It's an expedited process obviously, too - I am just remarking how it's much faster when your social significance is there rather than when you are like the rest of us good ol' Green Card holders.

My greencard took almost 11 months after I went for my biometric appointment. I applied for citizenship shortly after I got it.

I sent my packet to vsc a month ago, and just did my bio yesterday. The immigration official there laughed and said she would probably be seeing me for my citizenship before I get the 10 year card as it's taking so long at Vsc.

7 April Biometrics letter received for appt on April 28 (day 21)

11 April successful biometrics walk in (day 25)
