When to File? Conflicting Dates

My husband interviewed and was approved for his CR1 on 11 Sept 2014. He entered the US on 28 Jan 2015, and his passport is stamped and says his CR1 is valid to 28 Jan 2017. His green card expires on 28 Jan 2017. Because of this, I had been planning to file the I-751 in October this year.

However -

We recently received a letter from USCIS which states that he entered the US and became a CPR on 11 Sept 2014.

The USCIS website (and Visa Journey) clearly states that you should file within 90 days of the card expiry. I'm concerned that if I wait until October in line with his card expiry, we will get in trouble as the letter suggests they think his card expires in September.

As I see it, my options are:

1) File anyway and risk having the package returned. Are there any major issues with doing this?

2) Don't file until October (in line with the GC expiry) and risk bigger problems

I'm reluctant to call USCIS until I absolutely have to. Has anyone experienced this issue before? If so, what did you do? Any guidance that anyone can provide on this would be greatly appreciated.

File in accordance with your original plans. The USCIS letter is in error.

I don't know the answer to your question about just filing early, though. My understanding is that the worst that can happen is that they send the package back to you.

But I'm assuming as soon as they see the copies of the green card with the expiration date, they'll return the package.

The GC date is the correct one and is the date your status expires. File within 90 days of that.
