Hello, everyone.

I'm from Colombia, I'm engaged with a Colombian/American woman and we have a 3+ years relation.

I'm writing because I've read about people saying that the visa could be denied because the foreign citizen (me, in this case) doesn't have strong ties that bind him to his native country and I'd like to know more about the subject.

A little about me:

I'm 24, I have a full time job and a bank account. I'm a professional, I graduated from a university at the beginning of 2015 and my job gives me a very decent pay.

A little about her:

She's 25, she lives in Wisconsin, she works as a CNA and has also a very decent pay. She's from Colombia, her mother is American and that allowed her to go to the U.S. and live there.

A little about us:

We met in Cali at the time I was in university, she decided to leave to the US and we kept our relationship going despite the distance, I visited her in winter 2013, she came in October 2014, I went again by the end of spring in 2015 and proposed to her. We want to get married and we both want me to go live in the US.

We want to file a K1 visa since that's the fiancé visa, but there are a couple of things I want to clarify before we start the process, those are the issues I mentioned at the beginning of the post.

So, I'd like to ask people that have experience in this matter or that have gone through this procedure about it, is having a full time job and a bank account considered strong ties?

Thank you all for your answers.

For the K-1 Visa no one will gonna ask you about ,,strong ties'' because it's considered a visa for emigration . Strong ties are helping when you are applying for a non-emigrant visa (like tourist, business visa and so on).

Much luck in your journey !

Strong ties don't matter with the K1, I would say it works in reverse since with a K1 your submitting an intent to marry and migrate to the USA.

Good luck as you proceed.

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I have another question. The DOS webpage says this is a nonimmigrant visa: https://travel.state.gov/content/visas/en/immigrate/family/fiance-k-1.html

So, if everything goes fine and I have my visa approved, is there a chance I could get my entry denied for purchasing a one way ticket because, technically, this is a nonimmigrant visa?

Thank you all.

The K-1 is a "hybrid" visa -- a nonimmigrant visa with immigrant intent. This is why they are processed in the Immigrant Visa Units at the consulates and embassies. The advice that you've received above is all correct. Therefore, you need not worry about anything except fulfilling the USCIS requirements (for the I-129F petition, now) and showing the Bogota consular officer that you and your prometida have a bona fide relationship (for the visa application & interview, later).
