My father's roommate at the hospital. I befriended his family, just his wife and daughter. They're very kind, helping to care for my father when we're not there.

The backstory, father and mother came to the US 8 years ago, non-fook (legal) immigrants from Canton, China. The daughter was aged out of immigrating with them, so she got here a few years after her folks. The mother is a home health attendant. Daughter finished college in China, useless education here. So she's attending city college, chugging along.

The father is late 50s, worked as a waiter in Chinatown, until diagnosed in March, terminally ill. The father's petitioner, his relative, pretty much doesn't care about them at all. They live in a shared apt in Manhattan, a few blocks from where Tiff's family lived back in the day. I know they're in dire straits. The daughter had to take a semester off from her studies to care for her father. While the mom toils to support the family.

The gentle soul, he waves hi to me when I walk in, almost as if he's known me all his life, almost as if asking for my help.....

I feel compelled to lend a helping hand. I hate to see anyone in that predicament. But what can I do? How far can I go? How do I preserve their dignity and pride? I don't want them to have to relegate to being a charity case. And, having my own experience, I can surely see how they feel.

What can I do?

What can I do?

Consider Maimonides' "2x2x2 Levels of Charitable Giving," see man:

• Giving an interest-free loan to a person in need; forming a partnership with a person in need; giving a grant to a person in need; finding a job for a person in need; so long as that loan, grant, partnership, or job results in the person no longer living by relying upon others.
• Giving charity anonymously to an unknown recipient via a person (or public fund) which is trustworthy, wise, and can perform acts of charity with your money in a most impeccable fashion.
• Giving charity anonymously to a known recipient.
• Giving charity publicly to an unknown recipient.
• Giving charity before being asked.
• Giving adequately after being asked.
• Giving willingly, but inadequately.
• Giving "in sadness" (giving out of pity): It is thought that Maimonides was referring to giving because of the sad feelings one might have in seeing people in need (as opposed to giving because it is a religious obligation). Other translations say "Giving unwillingly."

Any of the first Many (2+1) should suit with dignity, si man. The most efficient would be the Many'rd, it seems to us man.

An idea would be to tell them that "kindness that goes around comes around" (in some fashion that would fit Chinese ethics or match a Chinese philosophy) and pay several months' worth of their bills, or set up an account that they can easily draw from, or give them a lump sum to take the financial pain away, si man.

Maybe use reason or compatible Chinese philosophy to get across that "if our positions were reversed, you would do the same for me," reason man.

The Landscape Mexican worked hard all day at the rental casa, Mexican work ethic man.

Mrs. T-B. saw his work and is most pleased, pleased she man.

Mrs. T-B. worked hard to compile r-casa repair receipts, assiduous she man.

The vacated tenants will get back about half of half of their security deposit, still too much man.

If they beef (distinctly possible), they'll wish that they'd never been born, metaphorical retroactive birth control man.

They should have medicaid, and other subsidized healthcare.

I'd like to find out more first.

Such as, do they have money carried over from China, is anyone else helping? How bad is their situation, etc....

This mother daughter seem sincere, and kind.

I'm thinking in the direction of a job offer, something that can accommodate the daughter's school schedule.

That is what I was thinking. It is hard to really offer a handout to people without issues. A job or a subtle we made too much food this week or I'm not using this phone/laptop/whatever anymore is better.

Sometimes people really just need good friends too and that can be a big help in and of itself. I suspect they'll probably need some help navigating what happens with social security and estate issues after his death...
