Not sure if this is the right place to ask this but I will give it a shot anyway :P

Currently I already got my green card and I'm planning to pursue an MBA degree next year and a bit confused regarding the needs of using admission consultants. I'm quite confident with my work experience and educational background, but I'm a little bit worried about writing essays (not only for the admission but also for scholarships) and also about putting the whole application together.

I have very limited experience in these types of application and I don't know how things work here in US. Therefore I'm thinking of hiring some "experts" like admission consultants to help me with this. The problem is their costs are quite steep and I'm also not sure which one to choose. Another thing is I won't apply to the top 10 business schools, only plan to shoot at Carlson in MN since I just cannot afford to move to other states at this time, so I'm not sure if this extra expense by hiring professionals worth a shot.

Anybody here has similar experience or maybe some suggestions ? Please share ... :help:

This is not a particularly educated response, as I have no experience with admissions consultants.

My first reaction though was that you made it through all the paperwork to get your green card, so I would think that business school applications would be a walk in the park!

Good luck!

Thanks ! :D Actually my main concern is that my English is not really that "great" especially when it comes to writing essays, I don't really have good grasps in using some "big" words, that's why I think I can use some experts' helps.

Any other experience or inputs, anyone ??

If you really want to write an essay and are looking into getting a consultant or whatever, u could just pay for an essay online!

Hmmm...not the best idea.

 i agree, not a good way to start grad school

Yea, I wouldn't think that will work as well... :P

Any other suggestions maybe ? Is there any green card holders out there that managed to get some scholarships or education loans ??

Simply a waste of money to my opinion. Why would you hire an admission consultant to write an essay?

Sometimes I think I know everything, and I regain consciousness. Seen it all, done it all, forgot most of it....

So much plenitude, yet so much emptiness

Well, actually 'I' will be the one who write the essays and answer all admission's questions, these consultants just do some coaching and give you feedbacks, also proofread your materials and give suggestions. I'm just not confident enough doing it by myself I guess, but I would like to hear someone else's experience.

From reading your posts, your English reads pretty good to me. I would say you are probably more than capable of doing it yourself, but are just a little daunted maybe?

Geee... thanks !!

It's just when I read some samples written by other people, they make me very nervous. They are using some "extravagant" words that wouldn't cross my mind when I write something. Maybe just a matter of re-assurance and confidence level I guess.

Thanks everyone for your inputs ! :D

Sometimes extravagant, flowery wording merely masks the fact that the authors haven't a clue what they're talking about!!

I got into a top 10 law school without any need for consultation. I also didn't use a single 'big' word in my essay/statement - admissions officials hate pretentious people.

Just make it personal and interesting. And have lots of your friends and work collegues read it. Lots of drafts my friend, lots of drafts.

I'm sure there are English majors at a nearby college/university that would provide editing/tutoring at a minimal cost if not for free (Go to the advisement office if you're unsure of where to start). I would say to look there first. And I agree with Mand, you have an excellent grasp of the English language!
