when to file renewal for EAD card?

my EAD last for a year. last year it expired in September. my lawyer file the renewal in July (August the latest, im not sure) and the renewal card came back in December, 3 months later.

in my state, driver license is tied to your EAD so when it expires, my DL expires. i have to renew it every year. they dont take renewal receipt,they want the actual card so i had to stop driving and working for 3 months

the one for 2016 expires in December, do you have any suggestion of when to file for renewal so it ll come back on time?

i saw some said 120 days, some said 90 days before expiration day. what was your experience?
