EAD card seemingly worthless

My husband is in the US on a K-1 visa. We got married in Ferbruary and promptly filed for his green card. He's already gotten his EAD but no word on the green card. My concern is that so far every single potential employer has told him they cannot or will not hire him until he has his green card. He already has a social secutiry card from when he was here many years ago as a student. He should have no trouble getting employment.

What's the point of the EAD if no one will hire you?

It is not legal for a company to state they will not hire you unless you have a green card. "Employment-authorised" means exactly that.

The only exception is that certain jobs (usually with local/state/federal government) can require US citizenship; other than that, employment discrimination on the basis of your EAD is highly illegal.

There are threads that pop up on these forums 2-3 times a year from people stating that an employer is telling them they won't hire them on the basis of their EAD and they need to have a green card. One call to the DoJ (linked above) is usually enough to get the employer to realise that their actions are not lawful.

Thanks everyone for the info. Looks like we need to be a little more diligent with these employers.
