As the Iraq war enters a fifth year, the conflict ... is fueling the highest level of defense spending since World War II.

Even with past spending adjusted upward for inflation, the $630 billion provided for the military this year exceeds the highest annual amounts during the Reagan-era defense buildup, the Vietnam War and the Korean War.

It's just the same old thing here....

Bush will be, as his certain Republican successor, be fighting the war of our generation.

The democrats have become the party of appeasement. Cowards, and traitors.

Too bad.

There's no war. The original idea was WMD hiding in IRAQ. Unfortunately, nothing was found. Now, the country is wrecked. I wish they would've done the same thing in Cambodia instead of dropping bombs secretively under the Nixon administration where they would keep soldiers there until the country is stable.

He spends like a drunken sailor while cutting taxes. Brilliant!

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

It's hard to call that kind of spending "defense", when it's more than the military expenditures of every other country in the world combined.

What's interesting to me is that we spend more to beat a desert-dwelling, primitive, superstitious society than we did to beat a much more sophisticated and lethal enemy - the Soviets.

one is more like minded than the other, which seems so much more alien in aspect in thought and deed. But at least babushka wears the head scarf!

This is getting worse by the minute. The budget is outrageous, meanwhile important domestic issues go unsettled.

More importantly, we keep losing our brethren over bad intel and endless IED's, now loaded with chlorine gas.

Not to mention the innocent Iraqi citizens caught in the middle.

This situation defines a quagmire.

Any takers on that assessment?

It has always been so for quite some time.

We've been #1 no doubt for a very long time, but I think it's only been within the last couple years that we've passed the combined totals of all the other countries.

But the logic of so much of the fighting is mind-boggling. We have increased the threat of terrorism against the US so much since 9/11 that it's digusting to hear the rhetoric about fighting them over there so we can be safe at home, while at the same time proclaiming that we're liberators and patting ourselves on the back for our noble intentions. OK, gotta go work out and blow off the steam that's building up. :ranting:

I agree. Whether the war was a good idea to begin with or not, clearly it is a quagmire today.

And the budget is mind-boggling. I find it hard to believe we need to spend more beating a bunch of Arab insurgents than we needed during the most expensive year of the nukular buildup during the cold war. Something isn't right with this picture.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.
