Hi All,

I had applied for immigration and submitted my Ds260 form.

In my earlier passport given name was "Karan Arora" and Surname was empty so in my DS260 form I had filled as

Given Name: "Karan Arora"

Surname: FNU

I got my passport updated (update to addresss) and it has the name as:

Given name: Karan

Surnames: Arora

Now will this be an issue as the names filled in DS260 and passport are different.

If so then what should I do now?

Would appreciate your inputs on this.

Hi!

I would suggest you contact the NVC immediately and inform them of the issue you encountered. They will be better able to advise you on what steps to take. Hope this helps!

Best of luck to you!

you are smart to update the name now. I wish I knew to do that for my husband. his visa has FNU as his given name and now so will his GC and all other IDs he will get when he arrives here. Changing it all now will be such a pain. What did you do to get the name corrected?

Call NVC and let them know you updated your passport and why. I don't think it will be a huge issue. they come across the FNU situation more often than not with Indian applicants.

Called NVC and told them about the naming issue.

They told to send a cover sheet mentioning the updates together with the proof ie passport.

When you got your new passport with correct names, did the passport number change or it remained same?

Passport number always changes after you make any updates to your passport.

Then wasn't there any problem during the interview because your passport number on DS260 was different than your new passport?

No they gave the visa pending update to ds 260. They opened our ds260 again that day and we edited that and mailed them back that we had completed the update.

Once that was done then the during the regular processing time of 2 weeks i think we got our visa.

Ok. I am in a similar situation. My father's passport only has Given Name and no Surname as below:

Surname:

Given Name: Balbir Singh

So on DS260, I was planning to leave the surname box empty and put Balbir Singh in the given name, but they don't let you leave surname blank. So now I am planning to add Singh as surname and Balbir as Given name on DS260 form but I'm afraid that may cause problems. And there is no way my father can change his given name & surname on his passport because all his legal documents are Balbir Singh as given name. My mother's passport has the same issue.

Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks

I believe we dont have anything specified on indian documents where its written given name. Its usually first and last name/surname. Yes passport is written with that.

So since you have not submitted ds260 you can either have passport updated with singh as surname in case there are not relevant docs with given name mentioned.

Or you can also write fnu as the given name.

Like I said, all of his docs have Balbir Singh as given (or first) name and no surname (or last name). So even if he tries to get the passport with separate given name (Balbir) and surname (Singh), he won't get it as there is no document supporting this. Do you think calling NVC may help?

It doesnt matter. While getting passport just write balbir as first and singh as surname. They wont question, at the passport counter only they check the documents and would highlight if any issue. You can try that out.

You could also contacting nvc to have another opinion.

Ok I will call NVC to have their opinion as well. If nothing else works, applying for passport with separate first and last name is the only option. Thanks for your suggestions.

You do not need any additional document for the same....you can do it by simply applying for reissue of passport reason bifurcation of name...I did it recently and it is very simple...when you get your new updated passport inform NVC by email and attach scanned copy of updated passport for reference.

I did this because I was advised by NVC to provide them    Updated Passport with desired name,if we want to remove FNU.
