I would suggest calling your local State Representative. When I arrived in the US, I had a hard time getting a DL. At the time I only had the I-551 stamp in my passport, my GC was in process, but we all know how long that can take. I went to my local DMV office and they wanted me to provide my visitor record, they did not seem to understand that a I-551 was = to a GC. I came home and immediately contacted my local State representative, after a discussion with him, I sent him links to the DOS website with info on I-551/GC. I received a call that day from the head of State DMV with a name, address and phone number of a contact at a DMV office who had my information and would look after me. I went that afternoon and left the office with my DL.

Are you for real??

You clearly haven't had to deal with the DMV much lol. Yes, this can make a huge difference. Even going back and hope for a different person can make a huge difference.

I have dealt with them almost once a year for 5 years. Last time I went there I wanted to renew my license with my Green Card and add motorcycle endorsement. Came home and realized they only added motorcycle so I had to come back again. The only plus side of all this is that they finally added me as an organ donor. Only took them 3 years...

Thank you all for your reply's.. the advice is greatly appreciated, Tomorrow I will go to another DMV and try again, here in Missouri they don't know much about immigration issues. I will keep updating on how it went.. Thanks again !!!

In Missouri you can contact the State DMV in Jefferson City by email. (They always responded within 24 hours.) That's how we resolved our issue with the local satellite office.

Yes, in MO going to another satellite site is always an option.

In the US it doesn't seems to amaze me anymore that difference officers; locations; states or different times of the day may result to different outcome. I went with my i-751 to renew my DL and was issued a 6 year license. The computer system was not playing ball when the officer tried issuing a year extension. He called the supervisor who advised him to override the system. I walked out of the DMV with a 'full' license, having paid for 8 years prior when I first got my DL.

Every DMV is different, I live in Stuart fl. And I got my GC in December 2015 and did the driving test in April 2016 and noticed that my DL expiration date says 2024! So try other DMV until you get results! Good luck!

I went to the BMV to renew my licence when I got my conditional GC which expires in 2017. After walking out I noticed that instead of matching the expiry date to my conditional GC they had given me a 4 year licence that doesn't expire until 2019. By that time, I should be through ROC and the citizenship process.

I did a little happy dance once I was back at home.

  • 1 year later...

I took I-797(extension of conditional resident receipt) to renew my drivers licence along with my  2 years Green card (almost about to expire) and old drivers licence (almost about to expire) . They just looked at the the I-797 and my greencard. Though there was a long line in DMV, they issued new drivers licence right away. No further questions asked.

In DMV, I waited 1 hr to get a number. So i took the number and went home because I knew they will make me wait another hour. I went home, took nap and came back after 1 hr and waited another 30-45 mins for my name to be called. He just looked at I-797 and greencard. Then took picture for licence and I got the Interim drivers licence. They said the licence itself will be mailed out between 2weeks - 2months. So now I am in waiting process for my DL.

Hope it works for you all. Good Luck.

I'm just posting here because I was looking for advice for my wife to get her State ID here in Texas and felt my experience today could help someone else. We brought a whole bunch of paperwork, but she looked at my wife's passport, Social Security Card, old state ID from another state, expired green card, and the USCIS form indicating that it was valid for another year while we await removal of the conditions of her residence. I didn't need our marriage license (even though I brought it). After this, the hard part (as is common in Texas) was proving residence - because I already had a Texas license I was going to sign an affidavit, but the TXDOT lady just used the USCIS letter mailed to us along with a bank statement I had brought.

edit/ FYI the lady did ask someone else if the USCIS paper could be used for Texas residence, but seemed certain that the paper could be used to prove identity and legal residence.

I applied for I765 renewal . My case starts with LIN which means it’s in  Nebraska .

Within a week I received I797c Notice of Action .

Current  wait to renew I765 based on a pending I485 ( didn't have interview yet)  as of 09/06/2019 for  Nebraska Service Center is 3-6 months ( I called USCIS and double checked)

I renewed my Comercial Driving License with I797c in COLORADO for 180 days .

I went to DMV in Littleton, CO( 311 E County Rd)

They do accept I797c to renew your DL, CDL, ID cards just for 180 days .

As of 09/06/2019

Good luck everyone !

Hey Folks,

So here is the Answers to you question. The answer is in the type of i-797 that you received, check to see if it is i-797(a, b or c).

A:

I797A means you have your i94 attached to it at the bottom of the i797 approval. The attached I94 will have expiration date. Typically this date will be same as your i 797A expiration date.

It also tells you that your status has been changed successfully. And you don’t have to do anything and you can stay in USA till your attached I94 is valid.

B:

While i 797B will not have I94 attached to it. Form I797B would be issued to a person who has never visited the USA. If you are in USA and applied h1b transfer or extension and you got i797b notice of approval. Then It means that your visa got approved but your status is not updated. We all know that you can not live in USA if you do not have a valid i94.

C:

While i 797C, notice of action is used to communicate information. Like receipt number etc. I 797C notice of action does not provide any immigration benefit. You are not supposed to use it for any immigration related work.

Read all about it here: https://theustravelguide.com/difference-between-i797a-and-i797b-and-i797c/

So the people in the DMV might or might not know the difference. In anycase, you should still seek legal guidance as I did not write that article, nor do I know who wrote it- but to me it makes sense. Good Luck.
