Hi all,

I would be grateful if anyone is able to answer the following. I understand that the re-entry permit only allows a green card holder to remain outside of the US for up to two years. However, I might have a job that could require me to remain outside of the US for 2 years and 2 months. During those 2 years and 2 months, I will continue to file for taxes, maintain my bank accounts in the US, etc.

Will it be possible for me to return to the US for 2-3 weeks after being outside of the US for 1 year and 9 months, and then leave the US again for another 5 months so that I could complete my job obligation of 2 years and 2 months? After that, I will certainly return to the US and live there indefinitely.

Thanks and any advice is much appreciated.

Afaik you'd need to apply for a new re-entry permit after the 2-year validity of the first one expires. You don't get another 2 years on the same permit by returning and leaving again, which is what it seems you are hoping to do? Or are you planning to use the "6 months on a green card is ok" guide for the second exit? Coming right after an extended stay out I think that would be risky. Edited by SusieQQQ
