It works all over europe.

No it doesn't. Europe isn't competitive in the world marketplace. Unemployment is sky high compared to here at home. Any you end up paying anyway. Like one poster said, the cost of these sick days ends up on the price of goods. Where does a gallon of gas or a cup of coffee or a pair of jeans or housing cost more-here or in Europe?

You've got to be kidding me, right? If by "not competitive" you mean "GDP of EU is roughly equivalent to the Unites States." Europe has its own share of problems, of course, but pretending it isn't an economic power is just dumb.

It also depends what industries we're talking about too - Manufacturing has been on a down-turn in Europe for many years, with companies pulling out their factory operations (due to high costs) and setting up shop in the far east. That is also true in the US - American made products cost more to manufacture and buy than asian imports - the only way of competing is to lower overheads with government subsidies, which is far from ideal. That outsourcing BTW is what is currently driving the economies of developing countries...

This is a very bad idea.... because the democrats thought of it.

if you're sick, too f*cking bad. you shouldn't have gotten sick. quit planning on being sick and you'll be ok. if you're sick, quit being a whiny lazy b!tch and come to work.

sigh...

Relieved that I will never work for you.

HM I agree that the system in Europe needs some fixing, but what you state here is not true! Gas is expensive because it has an environment surcharge and generally higher taxes to make people using public transportation instead of cars. A cup of coffee is WAY cheaper in Germany than here, also is housing. I lived in Munich which is one of the most expensive cities of Germany and I paid 437 Euros for a studio apartment - try that in NYC or San Francisco!!!! Food is extremely expensive in the United States for reasons I haven't figured out yet, also restaurants are extremely expensive cause you are forced to pay a 15% tip.

And: I earned more in Europe than I could ever get here in the outback, even as a student! My student job paid 15 Euros an hour, 20 paid vacation days a year and when I was sick I just was sick. It is a different system!

I am looking forward to moving to the Bay Area where I can finally again work according to my college degrees which will be in companies like Google - and fortunately they have very good incentives and benefits.

what kind of guard will be put in place to control/minmize abuse?

Daniel

:energetic:

I bet Mary Jo Kopeckne's relatives could have used some paid time off for her funeral. Oh, but Teddy's not talking about that. Maybe he's talking about his drug-addled son (the US rep from Rhode Island) who has to go to rehab so often he's quite likely used up his (already very generous) sick days from congess!

If your administrator tells you "when you're not here, you're not doing the job you were hired for"...what would you say?

I'd say "F**k you!", kick 'em in the box, then leave to go find a better job.

But then again, I've worked long and hard to get to where I am today and it wouoldn't take me more than a day to find another job.
