First time traveling with spousal visa

Hi everyone,

So I've had my spousal visa for the past 3 months and I will enter the US with my husband and kids for the first time using it. I was wondering what happens when I give the officer the sealed envelope that came with my visa? Will he ask me a bunch of questions? And will it take a long time?

It will depend on your POE. I precleared through Toronto and it took about an hour. You can see POE reviews of first time visa users using the tabs above.

this is my second question on this forum today. I will be entering the usa with my family (from canada) using my spousal visa for the first time on July 12th so i'm a little nervous.I was wondering if I can go on a little trip from montreal to Boston first to see family before July 12th where I will be flying out from montreal to California. I am thinking that the customs at the port en entry of vermont will ask for my sealed envelope.. In that case, will it be okay to drive back to montreal a week later to catch my flight to California? Thank you again, this forum has helped me so much during this journey!

Depends on POE, CBP officer, how busy they are etc. Plan for at least a couple of hours. Mine literally took five minutes, the took my package and said welcome to the US. So that was a nice surprise.

You can go to Boston if you want before going to California. Your visa will then be "endorsed" (i.e. become a temporary green card because CBP will place a standard entry stamp on the page next to the visa itself and write in applicable information).

If you need to return to Montreal before going to California, you will be able to do that.
