Oh yeah, we did too. But Jesus is not mentioned. Just a monotheistic god that the mooslims can jive with too. But not hindus.

That god line was also added in the '50s and was not part of the original pledge (it was just "one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.") Sometimes I omitted that part, little rebel me. The more you know!

Back then (60's & 70's) mooslims weren't really in the picture. Aside from Jews there really weren't any other religions in large enough numbers, other than the Christian sects. So it was very much implied as to which "God" we were pledging allegiance to. I remember a few of the Jewish kids who used to stand and say the pledge, but wouldn't recite the God part, or they would stand and say nothing at all because they too knew it wasn't their God they were pledging allegiance to. Sometimes the teachers would give them a hard time, but for the most part they were left alone.

I was raised back then and we did have a few other religions in our small town. There were a few Catholic families, but they mostly kept to themselves

Catholics are a Christian sect. Catholics were predominant in the Northeast along with Protestants. I was raised a Catholic but have long since left the church. I'm assuming you had mostly Southern Baptists in your area?

What a lot of people don't know about Islam is that Muslims pledge allegiance to Moses, Jesus, Abraham, Noah and Muhammed.

So, for Muslims, pledging allegiance to Jesus is not a problem.

That was a very astute assumption. I was joking bout the Catholic thing. 2 of my wives were Catholic

As a god? I don't think so.

Unfortunately, given the current state of global politics, I know way more about Islam than I ever wanted to... And I only know about it because of terrorism.

Makes me think back to the ever so wonderful George Carlin.

“Tell people there's an invisible man in the sky who created the universe, and the vast majority will believe you. Tell them the paint is wet, and they have to touch it to be sure.”

We used to have to stand and say the Pledge Of Allegiance with our right hand over our heart every morning before school. Part of the pledge had that "one nation under God" line that eventually got it the boot from public schools.

I never could figure out as a kid " one nation under G*d, invisible" mean that G*d or the nation was invisible

My godless parents sent me to fancypants private schools. I never had to pledge allegiance to anything except maybe never wearing white after Labor Day, the NYT Sunday crossword puzzle, and a well-constructed boat shoe.
