I have been filing my K1 visa on my own with my fiancée without a lawyer. We have sent the application the 20th of December 2015. We received our approval on the 9th of February 2016. Then 2 weeks later I received from my consulate a letter to garher information and to schedule appointment. We waited because our wedding date is August 6th and filing already was not wise because of the timeline. We made sure to start all paperwork from that moment onwards and April 22 I filed my application on my side and i had sent in my application scan page to consulate with the appointment schedule paper. Then I got a doctor appointment on June 1st and consulate interview on the 7th of June. I forgot my passport on 7th however i filed all documents and interview is scheduled two days later on 9th of June 2016. Then they approved immediately. It was on a Thursday. Now Friday a week later on 17th no passport back yet. I will call consulate today if i can come get it as I bought my plane ticket for Saturday 18th as they said within 5 business days you have your passport back. But so far my experience and how quick things have been developed. Further no obstacles really. Questions at consulate were not really difficult either.

Congratulations on your approval!

Has your ceac status changed to issued? What do you do if your passport is in the mail somewhere? I guess it's a reminder for future applicants, no ticket before visa in hand :-)

If it isn't difficult, it isn't worth it.

I have been at port of entry and i gave them my enveloppe. He opened the enveloppe and asked few generic questions, nice officer to speak to. Again finger prints like everywhere. And i could go in. And i have been here for few days and am now filing for my SSN (Social Security Number). I understand that you ARE able to work with a K1 visa which is great and doesnmt require an EAD form and so safes $380 bucks and time ?

As I said, this link https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211530, clearly states k1s are allowed to work. BUT there is a condition to do so, and it is having an ead.

The social security card alone doesn't give you the right to work.

K1s will have an annotation in the card "valid for work only with dhs authorization" https://www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/cards.htm

The authorization mentioned is the ead (employment authorization document).

http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn Read the same in the guide section.

We were finally approved at USCIS on June 22! I was waiting for an RFE for not specifying where we met online, but we didn't. Just got approved straight away after waiting close to 6 months. So happy now!
