Question for anyone who has moved to Michigan - what's the procedure for your driving license once you're there? Is it possible to convert (for want of a better word) your British (or any other) license, or do I have to go through the whole process with theory and practical driving tests?

Thanks!

Canadians can convert.

It looks like you would be able to convert, with a vision and road signs test. http://www.michigan.gov/sos/0,1607,7-127-1627_8669_9040_9042_47086-171810--,00.html Go through the steps at this website. Step 4 mentions if you have a valid foreign driver's license.

Step 4 is only for the Practice period geared towards first time holders, and only waves the 30 day Driving permit period. They will still be required to go through the Road skills portion (Step 5). The only place that can convert their license is Canada, as outlined on Step 1.

Skipping the Road skills test, for the UK will be highly unlikely, since in the UK they drive on the left side of the road, and here in the US and Canada we drive on the right side.

My apologies, I misread what it said. A valid UK driver's license is valid for driving in Michigan, if you are not becoming a resident. It seems silly that they require a driving test for someone moving here, but not for someone visiting here. But, Michigan doesn't do a lot of things that make sense. lol

Thanks for the input all! Not too worried about road skills tests, I've spent a reasonable amount of time driving during my visits, but was hoping it might just be a simple conversion - alas no!

As always you'll have to bring in whatever required documents to your DMV, probably take a vision, written, and road test. If you already know how to drive in America, brush up and you should be able to pass in no time.
