My mother put my cat down yesterday. The reason? She was allergic, badly. She didn't try to give her away or try to keep her outside (like she is between spring and fall). She just put her down. She was 12 years old, not ancient. I should have brought her with me. I don't want to see my mother anymore. This cat had gone through so much with me and didn't give a damn what I was like at any given moment, she just loved me.

Sorry to hear about the cat, I know you must be very sad and what your mom did was not right. But please try to keep in mind that this is your mother, and there is little that I can think of that would justify ruining your relationship with her. (F)

She doesn't respect me. She never has. Even now she thinks I can't take care of myself and always gives Karen some advice. There is only so much that I can take. I think this may be the breaking point.

Sorry to hear that. :( It's sad when perfectly healthy animals are killed out of no fault of their own. When I adopted one of my cats at the shelter a volunteer there told me they had someone drop off a cat because it purred too loud.

I don't know if Fuzzness has a mother like my sister's MIL, or my dad's mum.

With the above:

  • my grandmother loved only her second son (out of 8 children--my dad was her firstborn) because they both happened to have 09/20 as their birthdays. Not entirely obvious to outsiders due to her temperament (think of proverbial "Catholic nun school principal, but minus the education/knowledge"--or "non-English-speaking, South Indian version of Shona's MIL") but my dad completely missed the fact that she didn't mind his working 1,300 km from home--so why would she have minded nearly 13,000 (he could have stayed in US after completing his PhD at Columbia University--and has never explained his decision to return to India in any satisfactory manner since)
  • my sister's MIL only recognises her second son and his immediate family as "family" (obvious, even at the time of my sister's marriage in 1985--to everyone other than my BIL)

"Ruin" such a relationship--would that it had enough positive for that!

I'm sorry to hear about your cat. However, I think it's a little selfish to see your mother suffering from her allergic reaction. She gave you birth, and raised you. You have no idea how much she struggled to raise you. You should be grateful. Don't be mad at your mother.

I'am sorry for your loss, Fuzzness. Be comforted in knowing your cat is in heaven. (F)

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

If you would have read the whole post, you would have seen that she made no effort to give the cat a new home. It would have been very easy to do, she has a lot of family. I'm sorry that she is allergic to cats but it is still not a reason to kill a perfectly healthy cat that has been in the family for so long. I am furious with my mother. She is heartless.

I don't know Fuzzness and his mum (see my earlier speculative post), but it may not be a "mistake".

I am sorry for the loss of your cat. I know that no words can ease your saddness.

Forgiveness can be a really good thing. Forgiving someone is about doing something for yourself, more than the person being forgiven. And it doesnt mean you hve to forget all the past transgressions. (F)

If she is heartless, she would've abandoned you years ago and you wouldn't have a mother. She abandoned and sacrifice her own life to make sure you to raise you healthily. A cat to her is not her precious. It's only a burden to her life. You take your mother for granted. I never would fight with my mother on little stuff like that. After all, if she abandoned you, she would have made more money.

Consolemaster,

I think you are missing the point. Read between the lines. Fuzzness is grieving a LOSS . It's OK to be angry....for now. Fuzzness had 12 years of something a lot of people never get to experience, and that is unconditional love. Time heals all wounds, and I'am certain he/she will be able to forgive his/her mother, just not now. Let this person grieve in their own way. You comment was accurate, but your timing is a little off. No offense to you . (F)

I wish that were true--again, the example of my paternal grandmother.

(in my BIL's case, his mum DID force him--and not his younger brother--to go to boarding school).

Unfortunately, all-too-many parents play favouritism between their children (some, like my BIL's mum, don't even bother hiding it).
