Hello all,

I am an American Citizen living in Athens Greece for years. Last week got married to my Romanian wife who also been here most her life.

1. First question is about Translations for DCF Athens. I will have to get our marriage license, divorce degree translated to English (from Greek) ?

2. I have to be created to show co-mingling of house hold. I was going to show phone bill (Forthnet) in her name and then show the bank transactions of her paying for it. Do I have to get the actual phone bill translated to english? Its not difficult to see her name is on the bill and our address (in greek in athens address).

3. Also to add our rental agreement is and can only be in my name. I should give them this? I thought to do this so you can see rent payments (via online banking) being paid to the GREEK NAME on the rental agreement being paid from my wife's account. Would this work AND do I need to have the rental agreement translated?

4. I want to show the water bill being paid too, in the fashion as above.. do I need to have the water bill translated?? although this bill is in the building owners name... same with electric.

Thanks for any help,

Sov

Kalispera, k ego Athina, pantremeni me Amerikano. Good evening, I also live in Greece and I am married to a USC.

1. You need to get everything translated into English for the I-130. they will ONLY accept translations from Ypourgeio Eksoterikon which is in Arionos 10, Thiseio.

You will need an Apostile (Sfragida Hagis) for your divorce which you can get from Protodikeio. It costs 13 Euro per document. The translation agency will NOT accept legal documents without an apostile for translation.

If you need your Romanian wife's documents translated, ALL should have an Apostile from Romania unless she was born here. They are very strict about that!! (if your divorce if from the USA, no problem, skip this part)

2. This was not requested for the I-130. However you do need to prove you are here legally (show them Green Card - Adeia Paramonis). Same for her. This does not need translation.

3. If you wish to use this for the I-130, yes it needs to be translated. No apostile needed.

4.Why do you need all this? These are not the documents requested for the I-130.

The I-130 is to determine that yes you ARE an American, yes you are now divorced and re-married and as such you can petition for your Romanian wife.

Do you have the list requested for the I-130?

Notes: Your divorce must have the word "Final" or "Absolute" in them and the pertinent date.

Any foreign documents taken to Metafrastiki Ypiresia in Arionos street, must have Apostiles on them, or they will not be accepted. The Embassy does not per se, request this but our guys won't take your documents otherwise. Go early, huge lines, employees are very very short tempered and rude. Legal documents are 20 Euro a page. Copies .50 cents.

Anything you need, give me a shout. I'm your gal!! Read my review if you'd like on the Embassy. Not many people from Athens, so I fumbled a little too to find information.

PS. If you got married in a church, this marriage certificate will NOT do, They want the *civil* certificate from Lixiarxeion, ok?

Best of luck and ask away :)

1. The divorce paper is a greek one from Athens. (was married to a greek) I don't need apostile correct?

As for your points in 2 and 3 up there, I am trying to prove relationship because of this quote I see in the directions for I-130

Submit evidence of the bona fides of your marital union to cover the time period from the date of your marriage through present. Evidence that could establish an existing relationship may take many forms, including, but not limited to, proof that the intended beneficiary has been listed as the petitioner’s spouse on insurance policies, property records or bank accounts or other testimony and evidence regarding your shared residence and shared experiences.

now I don't have insurance, I only have my name on the lease and I think this can't change, and I think there is a problem with bank accounts because of capital controls. The only thing I have is her name on a Forthnet for our address. So I was going to show she pays bills via her bank account. Does this make sense and don't you have to prove relationship with the I-130? even submit letters from people knowing our relationship? and photos?

On your other point... we were married at town hall in Athens. :)) also I have a residence permit.

Anyway I have the last days pretty much read all your posts haha!

Thanks for the help!

Kalimera,

No you NEED an apostile on your Greek divorce papers. Metafrastiki ypiresia will NOT translate ANY legal document (regardless of origin) without one!! They were a liiiiittle more lenient on birth certificates (those need to be in English too).

Translate all your papers and her papers in English. Anything Romanian (i.e. birth certificate) will need apostile but since you had to submit this to get a marriage license here in Greece, you probably have it apostiled already.

That is good about the marriage taking place in City Hall. Bring that paper (translated).

We were NOT asked for proof of bona fide marriage but bring what you have. Mind you, we have a child together, we did submit her birth certificate BUT we were not asked for anything else!! The people at the Embassy know about capital controls, do not worry :)

Glad you found me!! :) :)

Ask away, anything you need that I can help with, I'm your gal!!!

Oh! Note about the Embassy's website... it is NOT accurate!! Wait until they send you instructions after you submit. We found the info on the website was vastly different than what we were told or asked when we presented ourselves to them :)
Bring what you have, all translated into English (although not sure about bills), apostile legal documents from both countries otherwise the translation agency will not accept them... and make sure you get your FINAL divorce papers we got an REF as I said on my husband's. Set us back two months to get!! :)

So you mean when I will go to the embassy to give the I-130 form, they may not want this addition "evidence"?

Will they need her birth certificate at this time? They took her original when we got married and won't give it back to us, so we are in process of getting a new one from Romania. I do have a photo copy of it though... and their certificates are in both Romanian and English. Can I use this photo copy for now?

Thank you very much for the support... we are very nervous since we don't have so many papers in both our names etc. What else do you think we should bring?

I was just thinking a bill with her name on it at our address. and a few support letters from people that know we are together.

They need to see the originals so photocopies won't do. They won't keep them though so you must have two copies of each plus the original. They will check the photocopies against the original but keep the copies. However the original must be presented.

Bring evidence like that but we were never asked, not when doing the I-130 and not at the interview either. I had brought wedding photos, every day fun photos, our wedding invitation. Nothing was asked :)

One thing I have to say about our Embassy, they are VERY strict and thorough. And I mean VERY. One detail out of place you get an RFE. Otherwise I found them helpful and friendly but they are certainly NOT like other Embassies I read about here (i.e. London) where you breeze by.

Thanks.. spent the day talking to 5 or 6 people for letters of support. Went to the Romanian embassy today to work on the birth certificate issue.

yesterday I went to Athinas 63 to get the divorce decree... I hope its the correct one you are talking about. Its basically the old marriage license on one page and the next page is the date of end and says 'final' in greek. in about a paragraph...

My divorce paper was different. I gave them the court decision plus the waiver of judicial means to show finality. But what you are describing should be fine too!!! :)

Don't forget the apostile on her birth certificate!! GL!!

You will need an Apostile (Sfragida Hagis) for your divorce which you can get from Protodikeio. It costs 13 Euro per document. The translation agency will NOT accept legal documents without an apostile for translation.

Hello my friend Marrienne,

I am just getting caught up. Hope you are well!?

Can you tell me where I have to go... like an address to get apostiles for my divorce and wedding certificates? I found confusing information on the 'Protodikeio'

Thanks! Sean

Hey Sean,
We are good, we landed in the USA 3 weeks ago and we have desperately been trying to get to grips with everything and get jobs :)

It depends on where you got divorced and married. Only the agency who issued the papers can give you an apostile. Are you papers from Greece? And if yes, where from? Athens?
If in Athens, try calling the Liksiarxeio in Athinas street for information on the wedding certificate OR the Dimarcheio that married you and tell them you need a "sfragida tis Xagis".
Protodikeio is in Euelpidon, you need to get a receipt for paying your 10 Euro per document, I think but I am not sure it is building 13. Then you need a 3 Euro megarosimo. Each building has a security station and they are very helpful to guiding you.

Note each town has a different place you must go to, so these are only good for papers issued in Athens, Greece.
HTH!!!
