Naturalization Confusion!!

Hello everyone,

I am so confused by all of this!! I joined this website to try to sort through some of my questions, only to become a little more confused!!

First of all, I renewed my GC about 6 or 7 years ago, only to have my purse stolen less than six months later. (The GC was in the purse!)

I would like to start the process of naturalization but was wondering if I needed to apply for a new GC prior to beginning my naturalization application. I was hoping that as long as I'm up to date in their system, that there would not be a need to have a physical GC in hand. Can someone help?

Also - - do I need to update my passport as well for this process? What about my social security card, (that was stolen too) Do I need to have a copy of that in hand as well???

Just loosing a GC doesn't affect your residency status for sure but during the Naturalization interview, they ask for your GC and you have to surrender your GC during the oath ceromony. I guess only if you provide the evidence that your card is unavailable or unusable then you are not required to show/give them your physical card. It depends if the officer gets convinced that whether your card is lost/stolen for real. Just telling them somebody stole the card might not be the good evidence. Did you file a police report that time? Do you have the report now? If you have the report, may be that report will be good enough. If not, you are probably required to apply for a new card and show your new card or the receipt of replacement application which will serve as the evidence of unavailability of your last card. That's a waste of few hundred bucks for sure.

US diesn't care about your current passport since you will be applying for a US Passport so no need to update that.

You don't need to necessarily have the SS card in hand if you don't need to show ever like for employment, loans like that but good to have the card handy. However you might need to show the proof of your current legal status (GC) to apply for the replacement of the SS card.

Just received the interview letter in the mail today and it specifically states You must bring the following with you to the interview:

this letter

your alien registration card

any evidence of selective service registration

your passport and / or any other documents you used in connection with any entries into the united states

You must have GC during your biometrics and interview.

You will not be allowed to take biometrics without GC (you must show it).

You should get a replacement for your GC asap.

Thanks everyone, that was helpful! No I never reapplied for another one. I was bitter that I had just paid hundreds of dollars and months later they informed me that I would have to do so again. I opted not to, which was probably a bad idea. I did have a police report the night my purse was stolen but that was many years ago, close to 10. Not sure I would be able to get my hands on a copy. I'll just suck it up and fork out the cash to save the headache. Thanks everyone again!
