He just wants an out.

Are you suggesting Religion is a gun?

From what? I'm not running anywhere. Just pointing out the double standard that's used when it comes to Islam. The notion being that it's inherently bad and makes them do these things.

“Hate is too great a burden to bear. It injures the hater more than it injures the hated.” – Coretta Scott King

"Oppressive language does more than represent violence; it is violence; does more than represent the limits of knowledge; it limits knowledge." -Toni Morrison

He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it.

Well, I personally think all religion is bad. And I think Islam is inherently oppressive of women. But I don't believe that mainstream Islam promotes violence. But this guy was clearly a radicalized Islamist that committed a by the definition hate crime against homosexuals. Maybe it came from an internal identity struggle, maybe not. Either way, in his mind, Islam justified his actions. And there are people producing literature online which he read to come to these conclusions. People writing about what they think Islam should be.

religion is not to blame in the same respect that guns are not to blame. it's about potential and the user.

Religion has proven time and time to be way more dangerous than guns.

Instead of saying crazy, we can say they have a degree of mental instability + being an evil individual. Because there are mentally ill people who DON'T go on killing sprees.

I think we're probably in agreement. Whether it's the person who shot up the black church or the person who shot up the gay club, they are evil individuals. I don't view them as the type of crazy where they can't be held responsible for their actions. They aren't victims of a mental disease, in my opinion.

I would say they are the type of crazy where they are doing something totally inconceivable to the vast majority of people. It's crazy, but not the type where they just need help and they'll be okay.

I was comparing religion and guns only in their potential for abuse, it all depends on the user.

How would you feel about laws against spreading hateful speech and messages? And would you feel this is against the first amendment?

Let's be real, the more you hear something that is negative and hateful, the more susceptible you can become to it.

Is it okay to put out internet blogs and youtube videos about gay people and saying they should die? Or you support a tragedy that has befallen them?

Its okay so long as its not a specific threat IMO. The UK has a law that allows hate speech to be prosecuted. Slippery slope IMO.

A slippery slope indeed but could it be anymore hurtful than the harm that is being done to individuals in the name of hate as it is?

How is it working out for the U.K.?

There's a lot of government intrusion. Often just in cases where something was just 'offensive' and not particularly violent or hateful. I'd say some are prone to more targeting than others.

At the same time there's a plethora of persons and organizations and political parties that like to hold demonstrations or say things that encompass extremely vile and hateful speech towards all sorts of people they hate. Don't think in these case much prosecution is ever done either.

Ok. I'm out of this discussion. Everyone wants their right to be racist, every one wants their right to say & preach hate filled things and every one wants their guns. MURICA!

I'll see you all in the next mass shooting thread.

It won't be long. We had over 170 already this year. That works out to more than one a day.

Clearly, we need more firearms to put an end to it. And more divisive and hateful rhetoric. That always helps.
