Isn't the total limit for the lottery 50,000? From all eligible nations?

*I may have read that it's been raised to 60,000?*

That is correct, the total limit that I have read is 50,000. I honestly don’t know if that number has been raised. The number of places allocated for both the North & South of Ireland should be on the Department of State website for those who are interested. :)

I thought the Irish already got special treatment. I heard..and I don't know if this is true...that Ireland sends over 50,000 immigrants every five years to the US but still qualifies for the green card lottery, which if they send that many immigrants, they shouldn't. Not as special as Cuba, but more special than most wouldn't you say? That's of course assuming that what I heard is true. :D

No offense to ye but.. I’s love to know were you could “hear” such a pile of $hite  ! I’d love to know were the red carpet was for me when I arrived!

I paid for my Visa, the medical and the various travel expenses back & forth.. and for the other documentation as needed. I packed up my life into two suitcases and came to an alien country to be with my wife. We married within the 90 days, paid for the AOS & paid for my EAD. We’ve been paying our bills, taxes and everything else ever since. What special about that, sounds very normal to me!

I have read (google it, it’s out there I’m sure) that there were something in the region of 50,000 Irish currently (from Ireland) in the US without proper documentation, illegal as you like to put it.

If there were 50,000 Irish arriving in the US every 5 years (10,000 per year) then I’m sure Ireland wouldn’t be allowed to take part in the VWP? I also doubt very much that Ireland North & South would be allowed to take part in the Green Card Lottery. I also doubt there would be that many Irish people left in Ireland after a few decades of such mass immigration. :hehe: You do know there are probably more people living in and around New York City than there are in all of Ireland!

I wouldn’t take anything you “hear” as the truth without first doing some research on the matter. I suggest you start with looking at the population of Ireland, North & South. Also have a look at modern immigration from Ireland to the US and how the Green Card Lottery actually operates. Sorry but it isn’t the 1800’s anymore! :D

I don’t support people, governments or political parties that support special treatment for any one group of immigrants over another. I’m very much against special treatment.

*shrug* I don't really care about Ireland* (sorry) so I haven't researched it. I did read somewhere that Ireland qualifies for the diversity lottery, but the rest of it comes from the mouths of the British, who have complained bitterly to me that the Irish get 'special treatment.' Then again, I should know better than to trust anything the British say about the Irish, and vice versa. There's still a wee bit of tension there.

* I'm one of those rare white Americans who DOESN'T claim Irish ancestry, hence Ireland has never interested me one bit. I got nothing against Ireland; I just got nothing for it either, if that makes any sense.

If you don’t care then why are your attempting to talk about something you admit you know nothing about  ? Didn’t I just say Ireland North & South qualify for the Diversity Lottery Program, why is that? The answer is on the Department of State website educate yourself by looking it up! :D

Ah so the British complain about how we get special treatment, suppose all the British people living in Ireland also get special treatment as well do they  ? I think maybe you mean your partner and or their friends complained about it or your just a troll :hehe: ? Hardly qualifies as “the British” dose it? Well again I’ll tell you go read the Department of State website and you’ll see exactly how and why Ireland qualifies for the Diversity Lottery program and Briton doesn’t. Actually there isn’t any tension.. I think your about 10 years too late for that, maybe you should do some reading and less listening to what you “hear”. :)

Yes you are one of those rare white Americans that does there absolute best to give the rest of your country men & women a bad name.

I LIVE in the UK, so I talk to limeys all day, every day. "The British" indeed.

Jesus, you're cranky. Oh, and if you're going to insult me...at least check your grammar and punctuation. By the way, 'your' is a possessive/attributive pronoun. I believe the word YOU'RE looking for is 'YOU'RE.' Why don't YOU do some research and learn the English language properly?

Don't even get me started on the special treatment Ireland has gotten from the EU. A lot of that recent financial success has come from western European taxpayers dealing with much higher unemployment rates. Now the Irish are throwing their toys out of the pram because countries like Poland are going to get a lot of the subsidy that formerly went to Ireland. WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH!:lol:

What is all this shite about. Ireland does not get special rights. As aidan said i went through the same process. My family are not exactly poor. I didnt leave due to the potatoe famine :P . My wife and myself left a very good lifestyle back in Ireland.

This argument that ireland does not agree with immigration is a load of shite. In my hometown back in Galway we have over 700 brazilians living in the town. They are well liked and bring alot of color to the town. Does that strike racism. I worked with alot of non eu immigrants and they had no problems. Every town in ireland has a story like this.

It just strikes me that the turkish poster is resentfull for the fact that he/she didnt get the job in ireland. The last time i checked turkey wasnt in the EU and won't be for quite a number of years. Ireland of course got favours from the EU during the 80's but who didnt with any new emerging nation.

The UK poster is just a typical english view of ireland. Get a life. Ireland don't get special favours.

They do; everyone in Europe seems prepared to acknowledge this except the Irish. That's OK, I can understand why they don't...there are massive subsidies to protect.

As for racism in Ireland...I only know what I've heard, and what I've heard doesn't paint a pretty picture. Rest assured Ireland isn't the only country in Europe where racism exists. I knew a Mexican couple here in the UK who were harassed and vandalized out of their home in Manchester because the neighbors thought they were Pakistani.

homesick_american,

Well of course you do, that explains how you’re an expert  ? Are you seriously trying to tell me that all or almost all the British people you’ve encountered/talked to or associated with complain about how much special treatment Ireland gets? You trying to tell me the people of Briton have nothing better to do than to complain about Ireland? I have to disagree with that assessment; I think the British have more to their life’s than crying like a bunch of old women with a sore arses about big, bad Ireland. :)

I’m not “cranky” I just don’t appreciate being told something you “hear”, if you’re going to say something back it up with some facts. Do some research on it, make your point. Don’t come at me half cocked with something you heard then cry like a baby when I respond. If you had no interest and didn’t care why post to begin with? Your posting alone showed an undeniable interest. If you really wanted to attack me you’d at least try to find something to attack other than pick at my less than perfect skills with English language. That’s just petty and immature.

I suppose Irelands financial success had nothing to do with decade’s worth of fanatical reform brought on and maintained by successive governments in the Irish Republic? It also had nothing to do with previous & current US administration helping to bring business into the island of Ireland, which happens to work both ways! It also couldn’t have had nothing to do with the various tax incentives that attract inward investment? There’s also the small issue of not draining the Irish economy of massive amounts of funds in order to maintain various “security” operations and wars around the globe and closer to home. Isn’t neutrality a good thing? I’m not saying for a second Ireland didn’t benefit from the EU, of course it did I’m just saying what is there to complain about?

I don’t believe Ireland got special treatment from the European Union, I believe it got the help it needed and badly needed. Ireland has in the past and will again become a net contributor to the EU; I suppose that’s also special treatment? I believe Poland as does many other Eastern European states need assistance and aid from the European Union in order to build their economies, especially after being occupied in the past. If given the chance, like Ireland I believe these countries will become an asset and a contributor to the European Union. :D

I find it hilarious that you have the nerve to imply that I'm ignorant when your posts paint the picture of someone whose grammar and spelling do nothing for the reputation of Irish education.

I'm not attacking Ireland, I'm just not needlessly flattering it. I have to be honest with you; all I've heard about Ireland (aside from the beauty of the rural landscape) has been unflattering.

And yes, you are correct...every country in the EU has racism problems, some more so than others. I've heard of the Irish reputation for racism, but I've witnessed breathtaking racism in the UK and France, and I haven't met a Pole yet who wasn't a racist. (This includes my Polish relatives.) So Ireland's definitely not the exception there!

mmmm hello do you live in the realworld. I am sorry to inform you but Ireland is highly regarded, what people have you been talking to!!! Im not been racist you are, generalising ireland and attacking its culture. Maybe you had a bad experience of ireland i dont know but you shouldnt make comments you know nothing about. I have lots of relations in england and the last time i checked they werent called racists because they were half irish. Ireland is a multi cultered nation now. I have met lots of english people and they have never a bad world about Ireland. Please go way and attack another nation that has pissed you off lately.

If all you can do is slag of aidans grammer so beit!!! he makes alot of interesting points. How would you like it if we slagged off england.

Racist, eh? So the Irish are a different race now? I'm white...what are they?

Go ahead and slag off England, I do it all the time. If you had read my posts instead of skimming them (or reading someone else's responses to them and jumping on the bandwagon like a little follower) you would realize that I'm not actually British. I'm American.

It's too bad we don't have minimum educational requirements for family-based immigration.

If I were you, I'd worry a lot more about my own ignorance than someone else's grammar mistakes. You want to blame Aidan's grammar and spelling mistakes on Irish education? Ok. Go for it. Now what's your excuse? ;)

Buh-bye. B)

Swing and a miss.

mmmm hello do you live in the realworld.

Excuse me. I was'nt skimming through anything and i knew you were american. MMM maybe your name gave it away. I dont jump on any bandwagon. I dont normally respond to threads like this but your comments bordered on slander. How many time have you been to ireland in the past.

Mimimum educational requirements are you implying that towards me. For your information buddy i have a degree.

I wont get involved in any slagging games, you play your little game and leave the grownups alone. Look i am sorry if i offended you with my comments.

I find this analysis of Ireland and the EU way off the mark -- yes, Ireland benefited tremendously from membership in the EU. This might be why they voted for ratification of the Nice Treaty in a referendum which allowed EU Accession for Poland and other Eastern European countries -- Ireland has lead the way in EU Enlargement.

Furthermore, Ireland did not place restriction on Polish workers coming to Ireland to seek work. The same could not be said of other EU countries, especially the French.

It’s very interesting you said that “So the Irish are a different race now? I'm white...what are they?”.

I don’t consider myself in any way shape or form a descendant of the Anglo/Norman “white” as you like to call it. Although yes we have a white in skin tone, I don’t consider myself in the standard white ethnic grouping at all. The ancient peoples that originally inhabited Ireland and that still exists in many forms today originated in Gaul, the Celtic peoples. So to answer your stupid question, yes I suppose the Irish are a different race even though we are white. Why do you seem to have an affixation with race and skin tone?

To answer you’re other stupid questions, I wouldn’t try to imply you were ignorant I’d just say if I believed it to be true. I now believe that to be true after witnessing your idiotic responses to perfectly valid and logical questions and answers to you’re questions. Instead of engaging in conversation, you like a child engage in petty attacks on my grammar? You avoid answering questions directed at you and attack us with your insults? Have you at all at any point in time thought before you opened your hole? I’ve a funny feeling you haven’t have you, if you did you’d know you’re wrong and have left it at that.

I find you can only be one of two things, either you’re a troll getting you’re kicks out of talking out you’re ####### or you’re a racist. In any case I’ve wasted enough time on you.

Maybe it’s time this thread was locked as it’s gone way off topic and isn’t of any benefit to anyone other than the suspected troll now.
