Isn't the total limit for the lottery 50,000? From all eligible nations?

That is correct, the total limit that I have read is 50,000. I honestly don’t know if that number has been raised. The number of places allocated for both the North & South of Ireland should be on the Department of State website for those who are interested.

I thought the Irish already got special treatment. I packed up my life into two suitcases and came to an alien country to be with my wife. We married within the 90 days, paid for the AOS & paid for my EAD. We’ve been paying our bills, taxes and everything else ever since. What special about that, sounds very normal to me!

If there were 50,000 Irish arriving in the US every 5 years (10,000 per year) then I’m sure Ireland wouldn’t be allowed to take part in the VWP? I also doubt very much that Ireland North & South would be allowed to take part in the Green Card Lottery. I also doubt there would be that many Irish people left in Ireland after a few decades of such mass immigration. You do know there are probably more people living in and around New York City than there are in all of Ireland!

I wouldn’t take anything you “hear” as the truth without first doing some research on the matter. I suggest you start with looking at the population of Ireland, North & South. Also have a look at modern immigration from Ireland to the US and how the Green Card Lottery actually operates. Sorry but it isn’t the 1800’s anymore!

Don't even get me started on the special treatment Ireland has gotten from the EU. A lot of that recent financial success has come from western European taxpayers dealing with much higher unemployment rates. Now the Irish are throwing their toys out of the pram because countries like Poland are going to get a lot of the subsidy that formerly went to Ireland. WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH!

This argument that ireland does not agree with immigration is a load of shite. In my hometown back in Galway we have over 700 brazilians living in the town. They are well liked and bring alot of color to the town. Does that strike racism. I worked with alot of non eu immigrants and they had no problems. Every town in ireland has a story like this.

It just strikes me that the turkish poster is resentfull for the fact that he/she didnt get the job in ireland. The last time i checked turkey wasnt in the EU and won't be for quite a number of years. Ireland of course got favours from the EU during the 80's but who didnt with any new emerging nation.

The UK poster is just a typical english view of ireland. Get a life. Ireland don't get special favours.

They do; everyone in Europe seems prepared to acknowledge this except the Irish. That's OK, I can understand why they don't...there are massive subsidies to protect.

As for racism in Ireland...I only know what I've heard, and what I've heard doesn't paint a pretty picture. Rest assured Ireland isn't the only country in Europe where racism exists. I knew a Mexican couple here in the UK who were harassed and vandalized out of their home in Manchester because the neighbors thought they were Pakistani.

It also had nothing to do with previous & current US administration helping to bring business into the island of Ireland, which happens to work both ways! It also couldn’t have had nothing to do with the various tax incentives that attract inward investment? There’s also the small issue of not draining the Irish economy of massive amounts of funds in order to maintain various “security” operations and wars around the globe and closer to home. Isn’t neutrality a good thing? I’m not saying for a second Ireland didn’t benefit from the EU, of course it did I’m just saying what is there to complain about?

And yes, you are correct...every country in the EU has racism problems, some more so than others. I've heard of the Irish reputation for racism, but I've witnessed breathtaking racism in the UK and France, and I haven't met a Pole yet who wasn't a racist. (This includes my Polish relatives.) So Ireland's definitely not the exception there!

I find this analysis of Ireland and the EU way off the mark -- yes, Ireland benefited tremendously from membership in the EU. This might be why they voted for ratification of the Nice Treaty in a referendum which allowed EU Accession for Poland and other Eastern European countries -- Ireland has lead the way in EU Enlargement.

Furthermore, Ireland did not place restriction on Polish workers coming to Ireland to seek work. The same could not be said of other EU countries, especially the French.

mmmm hello do you live in the realworld. I am sorry to inform you but Ireland is highly regarded, what people have you been talking to!!! Im not been racist you are, generalising ireland and attacking its culture. Maybe you had a bad experience of ireland i dont know but you shouldnt make comments you know nothing about. I have lots of relations in england and the last time i checked they werent called racists because they were half irish. Ireland is a multi cultered nation now. I have met lots of english people and they have never a bad world about Ireland. Please go way and attack another nation that has pissed you off lately.

I don’t consider myself in any way shape or form a descendant of the Anglo/Norman “white” as you like to call it. Although yes we have a white in skin tone, I don’t consider myself in the standard white ethnic grouping at all. The ancient peoples that originally inhabited Ireland and that still exists in many forms today originated in Gaul, the Celtic peoples. So to answer your stupid question, yes I suppose the Irish are a different race even though we are white. Why do you seem to have an affixation with race and skin tone?

To answer you’re other stupid questions, I wouldn’t try to imply you were ignorant I’d just say if I believed it to be true. I now believe that to be true after witnessing your idiotic responses to perfectly valid and logical questions and answers to you’re questions.
