I don't think things are any worse now than before when it comes to sex crimes. I do think the heightened awareness of these crimes along with the victims being more willing to report them and social media making it so easy to report the incidents to the general public makes it appear that way.

I've heard older adults in their 60s and above talk about sexual abuse of children happening in their generation and it not being reported because the family was too ashamed to. There are similar stories about rape, especially because police back then weren't really trained to handle it and there was a lot of the mentality of "she was asking for it because x, y, and z."

Yeah, maybe it is just increased awareness. That makes me feel a little bit better.

I'm Gen X and there was plenty of campus rape going on when I was a student. Many of us didn't report it because going on what some of our classmates had to go through (you had to raise it as a student ExCom case, as well as going to the cops), or we felt no one would believe us (drinking involved, your rapist was your boyfriend, etc.). But we all knew who the guys to avoid were, and which frats to steer clear of. I can't imagine back then even mentioning an assault to my parents, though I know now they would have fought like hell on my behalf. Best to just put it all away in a box and try not to think about it, right? :(
