San Francisco is the gay capital in the US. I've lived there for years. I don't think being with a same sex partner is an issue. You are probably over qualified.

You should check craigslist for job posting. I found my 2nd job there when I was staying in San Francisco.

I just want to add that if you bring up your relationship, it may appear unprofessional and they become uninterested.

Also, for retail, they will want someone who speaks good English and is understandable. A thick accent might not work well for retail.

Have you tried applying online? Try searching job offers in indeed.com. Also most cities have job center that will help you find a job that interest you or matches your qualification. One good trick i find when being interviewed is to research the company's mission/vision and tailor your answers to that because i have encountered companies that are very agressive while some are very wholesome/traditional

First off, you're in SF, being gay is NOT an issue, especially not in the retail and service industry. I work in hotel management in Austin, a very liberal city similar to SF, and half our team is either gay or transgender. It's not an issue.

Second, you shouldn't really be talking about your marriage in an interview other than if it comes up as part of their question about your authorization to work in the US. E.g. in my interview, I was asked about my work authorization and I said I have a green card through marriage to a USC.

Thirdly, you're bi-lingual, look for jobs in the hotel industry. There are lots of hotels in SF and they're always looking for people. Since you have no work experience, you're gonna have to start from the bottom but if you learn fast and work hard, promotions can come pretty quickly in the hotel industry. When I first started out in the industry some twelve years ago, I went from receptionist to guest relations manager in six months, having no previous hotel experience. If your English is good enough and you have a positive, bubbly personality, look for front desk jobs or sales admin jobs. In the hotel industry, we always say 'hire for personality, train for success' so they're gonna care much more about your personality than any previous work experience. Good luck.

+1

This is very great advice:) And i highly agree that most jobs hire for personality! so if you are not outgoing, retail and dealing with customer interations would not be the right job for you!!!

Hello everyone :)

I got my GC back in 2014. After getting my GC I spent one year studying English to improve my writing and speaking skills. I didn't feel good about my English before but now I do :). I have been looking for a job here in SF. I have a bachelor's degree in Business from Brazil. Unfortunetely I have no experience and it is hard to get experience without a job. I have tried retail stores but I don't know why, but every time I tell them I am married to a woman they say they will call me but never do ( I really hope it's not because I'm married to a woman.) So I would like some advice from you. What could I do to improve my chances of getting an administrative job? Should I just say that I am married but hide the fact that it's with a woman, until I get an offer? I would hate to lie, but it's been hard on my wife having to provide for both of us.

Thank you all for your time :)

A same sex couple shouldn't be a problem, especially in SF! But more than that, if they don't hire you based purely off this then it's illegal. There's a wonderful website that might help you place a job. They train you and help you construct a Resume if you either don't have one or it's lacking the formatting required for the states. I signed up with them but they needed me to come to the SF office on days I couldn't make it and only a day after I landed a job anyway! They would be massively helpful for you I'm sure. They're called Upwardly Global.
