Because my husband does not speak German and without that won't be able to find a decent job in Germany. On top of that, we would have struggled settling into my very closed off homogenous environment in rural Germany. I on the other hand am fluent in English, have lived abroad before and have an education that travels (reasonably) well. I never dreamt of living in the US - I moved for him. I am settling in nicely and enjoy the adventure but still dream about eventually returning to Germany or at least the EU one day - I don't wanna be old in the US. We joke about retiring back home in Germany. Maybe we'll revisit in a few years once I have dual citizenship and we have worked on the language. Leaving my family in Europe has been the hardest thing I have ever done - but if you wanna be with the one you love, you move mountains.

The US is not the land of wine and honey - and neither is Germany - but you always have a stronger tie to your home. I an mutlinational relationship one partner has to sacrifice their home and leave everything behind - it sucks, but it is what it is.

I'm not a huge fan of America myself but I'd move anywhere if it meant I could be with my man. In this case he can't move away from California because of his family situation and work. I don't have much that keeps me here so it was way easier for me to move than for him. That's why.

I moved to the US to marry a USC who is also a Brit by birth. There would be no chance of us moving her kids at this point in time even though we could have legally settled in the UK. Don't think her ex would have been too pleased for us to take the kids back to the UK either. Having been visiting the US for over 20 years I come to it open eyed about it's good and bad points.

I'll go for USC next year but only because we both want to split our time when we retire between the US and France and I don't want to run into any GC problems.

This is all assuming The Donald hasn't kicked me out anyway and Brexit doesn't happen...

My husband's the USC and due to his current situation, our only option was the US, so I really had no choice. :( Canada is my ideal country, it has the best of everything but since my husband can't stand the cold, that's not an option. We are looking at immigrating to Australia in the future though.

Not sure where you get that from but America really doesn't have the easiest spouse immigration. Spouse immigration to e.g Sweden and Norway is about a month or two with limited paperwork. And I have a friend in Montreal who's married to a Canadian. Her immigration process took seven months.

it took my friend 2 years to get canada PR..not sure where that is from..it says 15 months for someone comeing from the USA there and i was an overstay in the USA so i was already here and working ect...i think it took me 4 months from when i actually sent my paerwork in lol but the fact USA allows overstays to petition i guess makes it lax in my mind.... because it is hard as hell to get a work permit to work in this country lol

A spouse can immigrate to canada with immigrant intent, unlike the USA. Takes about 6 months to get a work visa but about 2 years to get the PR right now in country.

Upon consultation, Mrs. T-B. says that she would have been content to remain in Ecu had she not been exposed to living here. Her analogy is that it's like always having stayed in a Motel 6 -- it's OK when it's all that you know. However, the difference becomes clear when you stay in a Hilton or Westin, and then you're not satisfied with the Motel 6 any longer.

There's no such thing as "the best country in the world." With that said, my Vietnamese wife says she loves the USA because:

1. No bribery, corruption, constant paying-off officials and under-the-table stuff.

2. Anyone can obtain a good education and good living by working hard (i.e. opportunity and capitalism)

3. Freedom of speech

4. Political and religious freedom and choice

5. Environmental quality and concern (health laws, food safety, etc.)

6. The USA is a large, beautiful country with a lot to see and do

7. Women get treated better in the USA than Vietnam

8. Health care (probably the best in the world. Many foreigners come here for treatment - they don't go to Canada or Europe)

9. Animal welfare. We love our dogs, we don't eat them.

10. Our visa system may be tough, but even a high-fraud country like Vietnam is accepted in most cases

11. Anyone and everyone can become a citizen, own property, and choose their own paths

Great question, by the way. Glad you asked it.

The U.S. was not our first choice. Unfortunately due to the financial restriction on tied to the U.K. spousal visa moving their was not going to be an option for quite some time. We wanted to be together so we settled for the U.S.

We had previously discussed his relocation to Germany and then me applying for family reunification over there, but as a younger couple with limited work/education/general life experience it seemed quite risky to start a life somewhere without at least knowing a few people in case we needed support for any reason.
