I am on a J1 visa right now and is about to expire this July 2016. My husband is a green card holder and he's gonna get his citizenship on October 2017.

We are not married by law, only at church so no papers involved.

We consulted a lawyer before and the lawyer said that if we marry it might take for a little while and I might be staying illegally at the US which i prefer not to since my husband is not a citizen yet just a green card holder.

I tried to apply student visa as well but it didn't work since they asked for a show money of $22,000.

Is there any other way that I can stay in the US legally for a year while waiting for my husband's citizenship?

How did your husband obtain his greencard? If it is employment based, you may be able to get a visa as a dependent spouse.

You should start your own thread to get the most help.

Unless you can extend your J-1 status somehow, I don't think there is a way. If your husband can FILE for his citizenship in October 2017, it still takes about 6 months to process, so he would not actually become a citizen until sometime in 2018.
