I received my I-797 "Welcome to the U.S.A." notice in the mail today, and found something curious. It doesn't say anything about the card being "conditional" and it says "Your new card will expire in 10 years". Shouldn't it expire in 2 years? Did I miss a step? I'm sure that's not the case, and when the actual card comes it will expire in 2 years, but I'm wondering if anyone else has received the same notice?

Thanks!

Congratulations! Is the GC attached to the Welcome letter?

No, it states that I should receive it within the next three weeks.

No, I was a CSC transfer.

No offense, but ####### are USCIS thinking handing out 10 year green cards to people who they haven't even interviewed, and haven't met the supposed 2 year marriage limit required for non-conditional residency.

I hope this isn't a new policy that they haven't told us about.

Yeah, Dr_Lha, it kinda pisses me off too...

Filed AOS from F-1
Green Card approved on 01/04/07
Conditions removed 01/29/09

Citizenship Oath 08/23/12

I'm not pi$$ed. Not until somebody shows me the policy on it.

Until then I'm going on the presumption that there's a new clerk somewhere in California.

Oh wait.....that's not a presumption. They've hired in extra staff to clear the backlog. Whoops! Looks like somebody was asleep while the training video was running.

It may not be a new policy, but this is the third example of it happening I've heard of in the past week. I'd agree its probably an idiot/untrained person at USCIS making a mistake, but this is not a mistake they should be making.

I would give USCIS a call just to make sure everything is all correct, better to be safe than sorry, you know? what if you were meant to really have the 2 year green card, and they see that your status has expired after two years, you don't do anything, then you lose your status and it will cause a whole lot of stress and a big headache, just double check to make sure it's all ok.

Well it's official. My Permanent Resident Card arrived in the mail today, and sure enough, the expiration date is 03/13/2017. I feel like I just found a bag of money in the street. On one hand I must be extremely lucky, but on the other hand there must be some mistake. I'll have to send an email to USCIS to inquire. I will keep you all updated if I hear anything. Thanks for your help and best of luck to those still waiting!

I'm going to post the same answer here.. if you receive a 10-year card when you know you are meant to have a 2-year one, it is still your responsibility to file I-751 on time. The conditions are on your status by law; a card error does not overturn the law.

Why waste money filing to lift conditions if it is not needed. The correct thing is to go to the USCIS office and inquire about the error.

OK. I contacted USCIS today, and as I suspected, the 10-year green card is in fact a MISTAKE!!!!

I now have to fill out another form (I-90), send it to MSC along with my greencard, and make an infopass appointment in Denver to get a temporary stamp in my passport. So much for good luck!

Thanks to all who replied.

Dean
