I received my I-797 "Welcome to the U.S.A." notice in the mail today, and found something curious. It doesn't say anything about the card being "conditional" and it says "Your new card will expire in 10 years". Shouldn't it expire in 2 years? Did I miss a step? I'm sure that's not the case, and when the actual card comes it will expire in 2 years, but I'm wondering if anyone else has received the same notice?

Thanks!

It seems there was somebody else who received a 10-year GC and was supposed to get a 2-year card. Have you been married for 2 years or more or no? Sorry, I don't have time to check.

No, I've only been married for 8 months. As far as I knew, I would be getting a 2 year conditional card. I certainly won't complain if that isn't the case!

Yeah, well...there is some discussion about that. Let me see if I can find it.

No, I was a CSC transfer.

No, I was a CSC transfer.

No offense, but ####### are USCIS thinking handing out 10 year green cards to people who they haven't even interviewed, and haven't met the supposed 2 year marriage limit required for non-conditional residency.

I hope this isn't a new policy that they haven't told us about.

It's not new policy.

It's a prize. A golden egg. A 'congratulations'.

It comes with a Removal Order about 5 years from now.

Can you clarify removal order for me? when I got my green card looooooong time ago they didn't even expire lol. Do you have to remove conditions on even a 10 year card?

Thanks,

Michaela

"Note that the current green card is the I-155. As of a few years ago, green cards must be renewed every 10 years. It does not mean your actual status will expire in 10 years, but it does mean that you will need to renew the card in order to enjoy many of the benefits of permanent resident status, such as working and traveling. In addition, those with a temporary green card, MUST apply to have their conditional status removed by filing Form I-751, within the 90 day period before your status will expire. In this case, you WILL lose your status if you don't apply, so it's extremely important to do so. Hold onto your green card and guard it carefully. A woman recently contacted us when she found out she lost if just days before a trip abroad. This can mean having to cancel your trip, or at the very least, going through a great deal of stress and spending lots of time (and possibly money) trying to get it replaced quickly. You may not succeed on time either."

from immigration.about.com

How do I know if I need to renew my Green Card?

Cards issued since 1989 have an expiration date on the front of the card that indicates a 10-year validity. If you were issued your Green Card about 10 years ago and the card has an expiration date on it, you should check the expiration date to see when your card needs to be renewed.

Do I need to renew my Green Card if it was issued between 1979 and 1988 but does not have an expiration date?

No. Green Cards issued between 1979 and 1988 do not have expiration dates and do not need to be renewed at this time. USCIS will develop a plan for replacing these cards at a future time.

Will I lose my permanent resident status if I do not renew my Green Card?

No, you will not lose your permanent resident status if you do not renew your Green Card–your permanent resident status will not expire or change. However, you are required by law to carry evidence of your status/registration (e.g. a valid, unexpired Green Card or the temporary proof of status you receive at the time of filing to renew your Green Card.)
