Hi all,

I read on the VJ guide that an Affidavit of Support isn't required during the initial Visa Application but is optional - the point at which one's required is during the AOS stage. However, I've read on a lot of posts that applicants still submit one. Is this just to strengthen the case, should I ideally obtain one?

Thanks!

During the initial I-129F petition -> No Affidavit of Support is required.

After the I-129F petition is approved, you apply for the K1 visa at the US Consulate.

For the K1 visa application, the US Citizen petitioner will need to submit the Affidavit of Support I-134 form.

Done with K1, AOS and ROC

You are not yet married, so it will your fiancee, not spouse.

Nich-Nick has already answered your question here:

1) One that gets you the K1 visa. The form is I-134. It is not binding to the sponsor. London is quite easy on this one, not requiring mountains of proof that the sponsor has enough income or assets. You won't need one from your fiancé if she is unemployed. They will accept it from another person.

So if your fiancee has no income, you can either use a joint sponsor or self-sponsored (as previously discussed).

I was under the impression the joint sponsor could only be applied at the AOS stage. There's no need to be terse, I'm just trying to understand the process.

Each consulate is different in what they might accept as well as the steps to the interview process. If I answer a question of yours, you can be assured it is correct for a London fiancé visa. If you read a post about what happened in Manila or Juarez, then it may not be the correct answer for you.
